With the IP Cold start advance on, You should get a rattle (powerstroke like rattle), when it's off the rattle should go away, if you still get the rattle with the cold start advance off then it's to far advanced.

To do it when it's warm/hot you need to unplug the Cold Start Advance on the IP and jumper 12V+ to the Cold Start Advance terminal on the IP, thus activating the Cold Start Advance.
I use a remote starter switch to jumper the cold start advance that way I have control over it.
