I just got my ScanGauge II today. I programmed in EOT and TFT, ECT was already there, as in degrees F WT. I ran around the block and read 202 ECT, 149 TFT, and 259 EOT. I went straight home and got out the IR Temperature gun. I shot the oil filter cap, oil filter housing, and oil pan and all read 205. Can someone who is NOT trying to trouble shoot a plugged oil cooler as I am please check their trucks with an IR gun at these locations when at operating temp and let me know what they see? Additionally, has anyone seen this with the ScanGauge II? Has anyone seen the temperature sensor reading off like this? Is this a pipe dream and my oil temp really was 259 degrees, riding around town empty, with ECT at 202?
Yep, sounds like something is screwy. I don't see how the EOT can be so low compared to the ECT. How long was the engine running? Mine takes a while to for the EOT to match ECT, but only lags by a few degrees till fully warmed. that is reading with a SCII also. Flakey EOT sensor?
checked them 3 times. Drove probably 15 miles or so, the EOT just kept climbing. Got worried that it could actually be correct and went back to the house. Shot the 3 locations with the IR gun and all were 205, while the ScanGauge was reading 259.
The EOT sensor is somewhere in the oil passages in the engine valley. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see internal oil temps of 259 with pan and cap temps much lower. The amount of heat radiated by the pan and cap are going to be less than the actual oil temperature. Really I see little value to using an IR thermometer on the pan or the filter cap.
Also, with a plugged oil cooler, an oil temp of 259 is not at all surprising. I've seen threads from members with oil temps a lot higher than that.
Yes, that's why I hit Edit, and stated Edit: 259 EOT. Sorry for the confusion. Trying to determine the real temp. I can't see how the oil temp can be that much higher than a normal coolant temp. Additionally, the IR gun, at numerous points of inspection, shows a completely normal temperature. Again, sorry for the confusion.

Another check you can do is let the truck set over night and when you 1st lite the truck off the eot, ect and tft should all be within a degree or two of each other. If not there is a sensor or math problem involved.
Thanks for the reality check, apparently that was the problem.
69cj,
Once I got the correct parameters in the ScanGauge II ECT, EOT, and TFT were all within about 1.5 degrees prior to engine start. Now I get to install the oil cooler that will be arriving on the 'Big Brown Truck' as the differential is a tad high.
