Insuring your Dent
I called Hagerty and asked them the same thing. It seems like if we're going to daily drive these things, we're forced into regular policies, like State Farm, etc., which probably will not handle it well in the case of an accident. Unless I missed a good solution, getting insurance on these things, that's affordable and trustable, isn't going to be that easy to find, if it even exists. A normal insurance company probably won't handle a claim well with an old vehicle, with hard to determine value, and a guy that'd prefer to work on it himself.
Yeah...I'll give them a call and review my policy. Maybe it was a mileage thing, cuz I remember them asking how many miles I drove and each of the rigs I answered for were between 10 and 15k. So maybe they were willing to cover that distance. But I'll give it a look.
If anyone finds good coverage for a truck that gets used for errands, off the beaten path camping, hauling stuff, garbage dump runs, isn't garage kept, or a daily driver I might be interested in changing my coverage.
And just to keep this post somewhat on topic, It's just like the jackasses who drive without INSURANCE and wreck into our prized DENTS that make our INSURANCE RATES go through the roof. Some folks just want something for nothing, and it costs the rest of dollars in the end!!! How's that save? Yey for pulling one out!!!
Life is grand when you're a student :P
But I guess that's what you get with people that initially don't have insurance to begin with. I couldn't assume that they were that smart, if they're driving illegally.
Maybe I need to start my own Dentside and Better-than-Beater Insurance Company!!
"Occasional Commuting - If you like to drive your collector vehicle to work once in a while to blow the dust off of it, show off to your coworkers, or because there is a cruise-in on the way home, this is the usage type for you. If you drive your collector vehicle to work more than twice per week, please contact us to confirm if you qualify for coverage."
From the way I read this, you can drive it a couple times a week to work or wherever. Just got a dummy quote...When I selected the option, indicated that I lived in OK, 3000 miles per year and had a kill switch (passive device, which could be just putting the 4WD in neutral, pulling the coil wire, switch, etc.) for full coverage (up to $10000) for a 75 F250 it came out to $156 a year.
You've got to garage it, have a primary vehicle, and have 10 years driving experience with no major infraction (DWI) or no minor infraction (speeding) in last three years. I had a speeding ticket from last November and it was no problem.

Their website looks good! I'm going to seriously have to check them out. Thanks 70BroncoTX!

Personally, I'm looking to insure my dent as a primary, daily-driven vehicle, that won't be treated like a modern vehicle in case of an accident.

Question...I was looking for the option 'occasional driver' option everywhere, and couldn't find it. I went through the boat & recreational link and then followed the collector car link after that. Never saw the driver option. Any chance you have the path that you followed?
Once you fill out a couple of short pages (something like 12 questions, including your name, year and make of vehicle, and annual miles you plan to drive it) there's a button that says, "Get Quote". You don't get the quote yet--you have about 15 more questions, but most are check boxes. One of the boxes is for the "Vehicle used for occasional work." A description box can be clicked on to see the definition.
Maybe someone literally should just start their own company. I'm sure they could find a multitude of customers and put many other companies that deal with antiques out of business, at least for their antique services.
It'd be interesting to find an insurance comany that treats the vehicle like it's their own, like they helped you build it and appreciate it as much as you do, but don't charge you your first born child to keep it that way.
Alright folks, I'm steamed!
Just hung up with American Modern. Went through the whole process to get setup and all the while the lady was questioning me. When asked how many miles a year I would be driving, she read the list as it was on the website...Less than 1000, 300 or 6000. Now she didn't mention the unlimited selection that is on their website, so I asked if that was an option, and referenced the website menu. Her reply was 'you know you can't drive anywhere other than to a car show, an occasional pleasure drive and once a week to work.' I told her I read on the website twice a week to work.
I told her my situation, curently with State Farm, covered for $5000, restoring the vehicle, bla bla bla. I told her I needed coverage for $10-15K while I finish the restoration, at which time I'll have it appraised and it won't be an issue anymore.
I said I was concerned with how a claim would be handled, with all of the stipulation, what hoops would I have to jump through to prove I had only driven it to work once this week, or I really was coming home from a car show when we stopped at WalMart.
Her response was "We have denied claims when vehicles were hit in the WalMart parking lot because your not supposed to be driving thses cars to WalMart."
WHAT! I asked what if my pleasure drive was down to WalMart? Or we were showing off our rides in the WalMart parking lot? Reply "Only if it is a car show." What if I got hit in an intersection in the middle of the day? She said "As long as your trunk isn't full of groceries, you should be fine."
I hung up. I think it's a scam, it seems much more liberal on their website, but when it comes down to it, they've got you by the knutts when they deny your claim.
