I have used them off and on for maybe 50 years or so. They were necessary on the old 40's and 50's cars and trucks with sun-visors over the windshield.
There were two types. One had a suction cup and mounted on the dash. The other type mounted on the windshield trim. Both would allow you to look at the traffic signal in the prism type lens and worked very well.
Some of the really old ones were glass, ground for the prism effect.

Have one here . It has a threaded stud on the bottom and bolts on the dash . I works real well with the old flat straight up windshields . Found that out the first time I rolled up to the traffic light being the 1st one in line . Am not going to use it .
