I've had my t. cover off several times trying to get the c. seal to seal, using two different v. dampeners. This is a '75, so I do not have the luxury of guide pins like the later models. However, I have used the v. damp. to align the seal/cover. I have also tried w/and/without the sleeve.
Could it be the t. cover is warped or bad in some way that is not visible, preventing a seal? Silicone was applied to keeper slot, and outside of seal in cover. Oill applied to lip of seal prior to installation.
I guess anything is poss. But with it held in place by the v.damp., it seems unlikely. Also, each time I've replaced it, I've exerted far more care than the previous time.
There has to be something I'm not seeing...a crack or warpage. Could it be using a 78 cover on a 75 block?
Kevin, I'd vote for the small crack. Maybe only seeps when hot , with hot thin oil. I know how thorough and meticulis you are, especialy lining up things with the dampener. I have never done this, just slaped it on and tightened it down. No leaks, no seeps. Make the sign of the cross and splash the holy water. exorsize that demon, so you can drive and enjoy. OBCB
where exactly is it leaking? between the seal and crank,? between the seal and cover? between the cover and block? each has it's own set of cures. changing years should make no difference, if i bolts up, it fits.
I laughed seein that. I feel I'm pretty religious, was not offended. Imagined a bolt of lightin comin outta the sky of the pallious - "U better put that phrase in, Charlie!"
With the v. dampener in the way it is difficult to see. But when I get under it, and look up between the cover and v.d., I can see a thin trickle of oil coming straight down from where center of crank is.
Is it a significant leak? Not just seeping a little? Is the seal itself correct? I would vote on the crack theory as well, but if its leaking fast then a crack that large should be visible. It sounds like you are doing everything right. Very strange. Might be time to get another cover off Ebay and give that a shot.
rock auto.com has one for 119.89 includes all gaskets and seals as required. this is for a new cover for a 75 f 250 300 I6. what glue did you use to install the seal? I use black weatherstrip cement, then install the seal by hitting a 3/4" drive socket that fits perfect.it is possable to bend the seal a little bit, if not seated flat, and they will weep from between the seal and the cover. another problem from the 70's is the poor quality of the sand cast, sometimes there is "air bubbles " in the casting, you just don't see. my money goes on the seal not sitting flat though. if you take it back off, clean it up real good, and put it in the oven and bake it for about a 1/2 hr at 350*. when you remove it, if there is a leak in the cover, it will show up as a stain
