A direct drive transmission really don't work very good behind a diesel engine without an aux transmission or a really high ratio rear end.The road speed would be pretty slow

I'm pretty sure the 3208 was used with the 285.

Thanks for the response.<o></o>
When I had the trans rebuild I had the 5th gear is an overdrive.<o></o>
This what I am trying to do <o></o>
I have 2 1/2 ton military axles with 6.72 gear ratio.<o></o>
Have to keep diesel, because of vehicle reg in jersey.<o></o>
Would like to do 65 on high way.<o></o>
What diesel do you think I should use?<o></o>

Do you know what % overdrive you have? What size tires are you running?

Figure road speed by RPM X 60 devided by tire revs per mile devided by trans overdrive % devided by rear ratio

In a lot of cases a V series diesel turn more RPM than an inline

clark 285v trans

Will be using XZL’s around 45’s
For the overdrive ratio I will check
If I go to a V8 I would like to use a 7.3, because of all the aftermarket HI pro parts
What V8 would be best to use

How are you going to mate a 285 to a 7.3?

You might be able to mate the Clark 285V to the version of the 7.3 that was used in the International mediums. You might also want to look into the Cat 3208 or even something like a Detroit 6V53 to get the engine revs you want with that rear end ratio.

I'll second that!!!!! Good motors as long as you kept a spare gallon or two of oil in the cab.

Will the aftermarket HI/PRO parts from the ford 7.3 go onto the International 7.3?

Only difference is IH uses an SAE bellhousing the blocks are the same.So you would need the SAE adapter for the transmission
