F350 Stereo things
Nice forums.
I just added an 2001 F350 Lariat diesel Crew Cab to my small fleet (I am a builder/contractor). This one is going to be the work truck that I drive everyday (after all, we can't have the workers ruining that nice leather
)Currently, it has the "premium" in dash 6 disc CD changer system. Its not as premium as I would like it to be....
What I am thinking of doing (dont want to spend TOO much as it is still a work truck) was replacing the door speakers with some better ones. Polk has some nice looking 6x8's that would fit right in there for about $80 a pair. I am thinking of using the stock amp to power these... anyone have any idea how much power that thing has?? I assume its not the cleanest amp, but again, I am not wanting to blow a wad of cash on this set up.
Next, the system REALLY needs a sub. I am not interested in competing with the local kids and their boomy-***-bass-thumping Hondas with ridiculous looking oversized alien wing spoilers and coffee can exhaust tips that I try every day to steer off the road into ditches
... So I am thinking of building a box to go behind the rear seat to hold (1) 10" or (2) 8" subs. I just want some tight bass, not thumping madness.Does this head unit have RCA out for a sub? I would be inclined to think no.. If not, how do I go about setting up the line outs to go to an amp for the sub?? I used to know this stuff... but I am getting old and my memory is failing me
Also, I was thinking of adding "Bass Blockers" to the 6x8s as a cheap solution to keep the low notes from distorting them. Any thoughts on those?I was hoping to keep the whole upgrade under $500... but, you know how that goes...

I have done my homework, planned, cut the wood, and assembled just about every box I have ever used. Instead of paying $100-200 (if not, more) for a bought box, I pick out exactly how I want my subwoofer to sound and build it based on the net volume (and port tuning/area if applicalbe).
When people don't have the know-how to do their own box, I have offered to help them design their own box. Hell, I helped a kid last summer by designing a ported box for his two Infinity Reference 10" subs.. Since he had never built a box, I even went out of the way to design each cut of MDF, based on his interior mesurements of his trunk. He says his subs are MUCH louder than before and even sound better, too! People, including car stereo shop employees, do not believe that he is just running those two 10" subs in his car.
So maybe someone isn't into building boxes and doesn't have anyone around him to build it for him. In that case, I WOULD advocate a pre-fab/custom enclosure. I know that deckpros is looking for a more simple setup. I his case, a pre-fab/custom box would probably do it. I just wouldn't say that it would necassarily sound better.
