92 Bronco Diff. Silicone or Gasket?

I'd like to go through and change all the fluids in my Bronco other than the Engine oil and I wanted to know before I tore off the back plate if the stock 92 Bronco used a gasket on the differential cover or if I have to silicone it back afterwords? Also, what's the best way to do the M5OD transmission and the BW transfer case? Should I invest in a good suction pump or are there decent drain/refill points for these. I'll admit I've only crawled under there a couple of times to change the oil and didn't spend alot of time studying things since the concrete was pretty warm that day.

Thanks

The 8.8 differential was never equipped with a gasket from the factory. RTV was the original sealant between housing and cover.

Just be sure to let the RTV dry overnight before you put in the fluid or else it will leak.

Really? You have to let it cure overnight? What would they use at a dealership?

Sealant with a higher rate of cure. Over night isn't necessary for all types of silicone sealers but the faster they cure the more expensive they are.

I applied the bead to the cover, waited almost and hour before reassembly, then let it sit overnight before adding fluid. No leak. I used the blue RTV.

Interesting. I am about to change the fluids in both my Ram and my Bronco and had not considered them being out for a day after doing it. I always figured that if you applied the RTV, let it cure accordingly and then reassembled, it would be kosher to refill and go. Good to know so I can make sure I buy the right stuff.

Just a reminder, if the rear is limited slip add friction modifier to it also.

You can get gaskets for the 8.8 aftermarket. When I used one I also slimed both sides with RTV so I can't tell you if the gasket by itself would be enough.

You could also help it dry a little faster with a hair dryer, or heat gun.

I recently changed a rightside axle shaft. I put everything back together, used black RTV on the cover, filled the diff right away and never had it leak. Just don't be stingy with the RTV.

Yeah, that could work, but i prefer to let it cure, just to be sure, if your dif. leaked you would have to open it again, probably lose some of the dif. oil, etc...

I'm lucky in that my Bronco is an open differential for right now and my Ram has the gear driven differential that doesn't require friction additive.
