I posted a while back saying when my 1991 7.3 starts, which is instantly. Then it dies instantly. Gotta crank it for 30 seconds with the pedal to the metal. Then it starts blowing smoke and starts kicking in, then fires right up. After it fires, it chuggs for a few seconds like its gulping air or something. Then it smooths out for the day. EVERYONE said: Its the fuel return lines...Change them. I did change them. Very well in fact. beautiful job. High quality parts too. but starting the very next day. it starts the exact same way, chuggs, then clears up. So what i am asking is whats the next thing to check? replace or fix....
Yes I did lube them. I guess it wouldn't hurt to do it again being its been like two weeks. I have to rule out something somewhere don't I ? I even wiggled them after they were tightened just to "feel" them seat in those grooves. although you can't literally feel it.
Check all the ruber lines for dry rotting and the metal lines of anything out of the ordinary kinks rust holes if that all looks good and its a dual tank truck bypas fule tank selector valve and run both the return and feed to one tank start it get any air out let it sit over night and see what happens if it starts fine replace the selector valve if not replace the lift pump.
on second thought if it isn't sucking air and runing like crap once you have her going the just check over the whole retun system back to the tank and if its good replace the lift pump be sure to check on here for the proper lift pump replacement procedure.
Question. Is the fuel pump the same as the lift pump? my truck is a 1991. Curious cuz one of those sites showed an in tank pump. I'm pretty sure I don't have an in tank pump but not positive. Also is the fuel pump called a lift pump because it simply lifts the fuel from the bottom to the top? Or is a lift pump something totally different? My old ford car has a mechanical fuel pump, it was never considered a lift pump. thats why i am curious. thanks
One more question for this morning. I recall 2yrs ago that a half dozen times that when i park with my front end higher than the back end while at work. the truck won't restart for quite a while. would this have anything to do with a lift pump?
nope that would be the tank pick up tubes. If they are loose, falling off etc they will cause those problems. Tanks gotta come out to get to them. Your truck will have lift pump, passenger side of engine down under the exhaust manifold. follow the fuel lines down and you will see it. If it isnt there and you see a metal plate, typically chrome, then you have electric pumps. When you turn the key on, do you hear an electrical whirring/buzzing sound? or nothing? I have the intank pumps from a gasser. Dont recommend them unless you install a pressure regulator.
I already seen what I thought was a mechanical fuel pump on the passenger side of my block under the manifold. But peeps are calling it a lift pump. I was wondering if there was such a thing as a lift pump and a fuel pump. Mechanical speaking, not electric. Or is the fuel pump also known as a lift pump?
if you have air getting in useually it won't afect the system with a new lift pump. Tey call it a lift pump because it lifts the fule from the tanks to the injection pump in our case.
