I have a co-worker who bought a 5th wheel trailer. He wants to take to some property he owns in Michigan, but only has a Silverado 1500. He asked yesterday if I was considering selling my truck and I told him no. He asked about renting it to go up towing the 5th wheel and then returning empty. He would be using my Reese 20K hitch. My question is, what would be a fair price to charge him? The distance would be about 850 miles one way. He is planning a less direct, but flatter route going out, so return might be shorter. Keep in mind, mine is not a new truck.
I know he is your friend, but if he were asking me to rent my truck,he would be renting me with the truck!! in other words, offer to take it for him and he pays whatever you want to charge within reason. I am the only one that drives my truck.
I agree with everything that has been said - it's not a good idea. Especially if you work with the guy - that would make things even more complicated if something happens to your truck.
It's not your problem that he bought a 5th-wheel trailer without a way to transport it; he should have figured out a plan before buying it.
He asked if I would go with him, two problems, I really don't want to burn up that much vacation time and wife would get rather upset at me being gone for several days without her. I was also going to let him swing through New Brighton, PA and pick up a snowblower attachment I bought for my Ford YT16H. I do plan on one way or the other teaching him how to haul it whether he uses my truck or another.
I have rented out vehicles to friends. What I do is charge 5 cents a mile, he pays for all the gas, he pays for anything that breaks that is his fault and we split the cost of any item that breaks due to normal wear and tear. And he cleans the vehicle when done using it. I always keep my vehicles clean. I've never had an issue with this method yet. Worst thing that has happened I had a friend back into a trailer with a car and paid for all of the repair work, paint looked better then before
Hmm, that's actually pretty generous, I was looking at 50 cents a mile and he sounded interested, maybe I'll tell him 25 cents. He already expected to pay for gas at probably 8-8.5 mpg towing and 10 empty.

Reason: Added dash
I just like to help people out. If I say some price then they feel better. For some reason most people I know thinks money fixes everything. For 10 cents a mile he would have to pay $150 or so for the whole trip above and beyond anything else. I also made a contract type deal that everyone signs and dates saying all the requirments of the renting of the vehicle, then no one gets screwed.

His Silverado is a 1500, his trailer is an 88 30' Holiday Rambler without a slide. The older Holiday Rambler's are quite heavy, he thinks around 10K, I'm thinking 8-9K though. I don't know which engine he has, but I'm thinking probably the small V8.

Why did'nt he just buy it from you then?
He tried to, I refused to sell it to him. Even though friends and gentlemen agree with handshakes, no one can really tell how a person will react when or if something breaks. I just didn't want to deal with it. And as a good friend, he understood and looked elsewhere.
AS EVERYONE HAS SAID , NOTHING GOOD COMES OUT OF , IN MOST CASES , LETTING FRIENDS USE A VEHICLE FOR ANYTHING . FOR SOME REASON OR ANOTHER THEY DON'T SEEM TO FEEL RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG AS THEY ARE YER BUDDY AND YOU SHOULDA KNOWN ................ SAME GOES EVEN MORE SO FOR FAMILY !ooops sorry for the caps lock .............. let him use his chebby and kill a less wanted vehicle in his wanderings . noone will miss a chebby ...........................
