Repeated WIF light

When was it they came out with the updated cover/sensor? I've got a friend that's got an 06 6.0 and his light is coming on a lot (like 2 times a month almost). He changes his fuel filters every 10k miles and says every time the light comes on, he drains it and water DOES come out, so I don't guess it's a false alarm. He doesn't fill up at the same stations all the time so it's not like he's goin to the one station in town with bad diesel. What could be the problem? I fill up at all the stations he fills up at, and I don't have any of these problems, however I did put the upgraded sensor on this past winter so that may have something to do with it.

You said every time the WIF light comes on and your friend drains the HFCM water does come out. That just says the sensor is working properly. unfortunately, Changing the Sensor will not help with the water problem.

But that's what's so strange, we fill up at the same stations, we use the same fuel filters (Motorcraft of coarse), and we usually change filters at the same time. I don't get why his would do that and mine wouldn't. We both just changed fuel filters about a month ago and when I drained my HFCM, there was no water at all, and it hasn't been drained since winter, so I know mine is working.

How is he determining that there is water in the HFCM when he drains it?

It looks too clear to be all diesel.

How long did he wait til he drained it when there was water in fuel? If you wait too long the sensor could have been ruined by "sitting" in water. I have an 06 and that has happened to me.

He says he does it right when it comes on but I don't know for sure.

If everything you say is factual then apparently he got a slug of water in his tank and you didn't. The only sure way to confirm would be to completely drain and clean his tank and start fresh. That or buy a new sensor and take a chance. The fact that you say he gets water out everytime leads me to believe that the sensor is doing its job.

I'm willing to bet that the clear fluid is indeed fuel not h2o. My 05 did this to me. I simply took hfcm off truck, carefully disassembled and found some gooey gunk built up around the sensor probe. I cleaned it all out( whole hfcm) and put back on truck. No problems since. Its worth looking in to. Simple job to tackle..

It should be pretty obvious if there is water in the fuel and from your description I wonder.

Water and diesel won't mix, so if he drains into a clear container, there should be a layer of water on the bottom and fuel on the top, with a clear line of delineation between the two.

If he is seeing a consistent fluid that is all the same, it is diesel, no matter how "clear" it appears. (Unless it's all water, and then he has bigger problems).

Are either of you using an additive like Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne?

Since I've started using it my WIF has never come on (and the truck runs better)

Just as an FYI, Ford specifies additives to be "demulsifiers". They are to separate water out and make it easier for the primary fuel filter to block the water. Functioning this way, the WIF would tend to come on more often if there were water present in the fuel.
