Wiring suggestions please

First off, I must have been on crack when I first joined here telling everyone that the 41 fire engine was a flathead 6. It's actually an 8...duh.

So anyhow, after just replacing another battery (running 8 volt now) I am going to wire up the rear warning lights. Here's a picture:

When the body shop had it a few months ago, they wired up two LED brake/running lights under the rear step. They made those to run with a switch for running and installed a brake switch then all to a separate 12 volt battery.

What should I do with the rear warning lights in the picture? Wire them up to the 8 volt or 12 volt battery? Anyone have any good ideas as to how I can make them wigwag? Can I charge the 12 volt off the 8 volt system in any way? I know there are a lot of questions, but not having them wired has been REALLY bugging me. And as a side note, the gumdrop light on the roof is wired to a switch in the cab by itself.

With enough ingenuity, anything is possible. Yes, you can make 12V from 8V, but it requires an inverter to do so. If all you are doing is running some LED brake lights from it, then it shouldn't be too tough to do. On the other hand, it would probably also be pretty easy for an electronics guru to re-wire the LED light clusters to work off of 8V, too. For simplicity's sake, I would probably try to get everything to work off of 8V, if possible. Are the LEDs off-the-shelf brake lights? Or are they something special?

Dave,

Currently all that runs off the 12v battery are the LED tail lights. They were some off the shelf lights mounted on diamond plate about 2 feet from the end of the step.

I would really like to either run the tail lights and rear warning lights off the 12v or just get it all on 8v.

I was thinking about just a few relays and the old incandescent lights up top will wigwag off the 12v battery, but not sure which way to go yet. Obviously it all worked before, but the bodyshop cut all the wires away.

Well, either way can be done. I've made LED lights for my brother's truck, hitch covers, my own vehicles, etc, so it's not a big deal to me. I just suggested the single voltage to eliminate the need for an inverter to bump the voltage up to 12V. If using standard 12V bulbs, though, you'll have to use 12V or they won't be very bright.

I would really like to wire the warning lights into the switch that powers the gumball light on the roof. Do you know what type of relay and flasher I would need to achieve a wigwag pattern for two incandescent bulbs on the existing 8 volt system?

It would be nice to get rid of the extra 12 volt battery if at all possible and run the LED brake lights still. Is this something that I could achieve with relative ease on an 8 volt system?

Thanks for your help.

Depends on your definition of relative ease. Unfortunately, for someone without the tools and know-how, everything on an 8V system would have to be custom made, AFAIK.

BTW, I just emailed you.
