Where do I find a good sport bumper that's not a reproduction for a good price? Right now my truck has a step bumper from a newer F-150 and I don't really like it, I want to go back to original. I found this on craigslist: 1964 ford f- 250 rear bumper. I know the brackets for it won't work because of the frame width differences but would the bumper still be useable if I got the correct brackets? I want a chrome one but haven't had any luck with finding one. Any ideas? Thanks.
I ditched my dock bumper (rusted, dented, and twisted) and went back to the factory style. I believe that alot of owners passed on the factory bumper because they wanted to tow. I didn't find a single Dent with a factory bumper in eight wrecking yards. I resorted to using an early 80s Bronco and a bolt-on, frame-mounted Class III hitch. You can also try Econolines which I believe are less sought after. Measure your frame width before heading to the yard !!!!
The Bronco brackets will need to be extended by about one inch and re-drilled so that the mounts match to your frame holes. Also, Ford went to metric nuts in the early 80s so bring an 18 mm combo or adjustable wrench with you.
Here's a pic of the stock and modified Bronco bracket. I sectioned in some 3/16 x 2 bar stock in order to position it correctly for the bumper to be one inch from the rear fender and also to have two holts securing it to the frame.
Another benefit to using a Bronco bumper is that it comes with (what I call) outrigger brackets to triangulate the outer ends of the bumper. Those simply bolted on with no mods cuz it uses to the two unmodified holes on the bracket.
