Difference in mounts?

I recently bought a '06 F150 XL with v6 and an 8 foot box. It's just a two wheel drive but that's what I wanted as I've always gotten to where I need to go in the past. Anyway, the hitch was the basic painted bumper with the ball through the bumper for pulling. I very occasionally planned on pulling a car trailer and found a chrome bumper with the receiver hitch off craigslist. I bought it took off my old bumper (4 bolts) but when I went to mount the new bumper I found that the mounting holes were not even close to the correct location with bracket. I'm pretty sure the bumper was off an '04 model with 4wd. Do they make many different mounts each year or did they do this so people wouldn't put a receiver hitch on a v6 pickup due to the reduced power? I'm sure I can make it work but it's going to take some fabrication which I didn't plan on. Thanks for any info!

IIRC correctly, 2004 was a transitional year, with an "old body style" and a "new body style".
You may have bought a bumper for an old body style.
