Is the metal button still glued to the windshield? There should be a set screw or something on the bottom of the metal button that the mirror slides on to, after that, I always took a small thin item, like a razor blade and worked it off that way. Some have a channel that you can work a small screw driving in to, working against the button and the glue to get it off. After that, clean it real good with goo off or some other type of cleaner, both the windshield and metal button the mirror slides on to. Before you start, take a crayon or something similar and mark on the outside of the windshield where your mirror is, that way you get it back in the same place when you go to reinstall it.
I can usually get these around the local junk yards for around 25.00 each. If they are the same as on an 03 Excursion. Mine has a little green light that shows its on. If I can help I will. I'm going to look for a few odds and ends this week-end if it dosen't rain. I need some of the door handel plugs and of course am always looking for V-10 spare parts just in case I need them. The V-10 parts are hard to find around here.

If you look at the bottom of the base that is on the glass you will see a small hole/slot there. Use a small flat screwdriver or awl and push it up in there from the bottom, as u pull up on the mirror. Little spring clip holds it on to the base that is glued to the glass. You new replacement will just slide on from the top, and you will want to just snug it into place. If you ever pull of the base don't even bother wasting your time or money buying the do it yourself kits. I end up having to clean all that cr@p off and doing it right, and have never seen one come back. Go to a glass shop and they can glue it on properly if it ever happens.
