Service engine light came on

I have a 2008 F350 diesel dually with 6500 miles on it (I know, I know I need to drive it more) I just started it after setting idle for 3 weeks while I went on vacation, well after about 1 mile the engine light came on. Any ideas what could cause this and will it be safe to drive to my closest dealer (85 miles away). It was completly serviced at 5000 miles. Thanks in advance.

Check all fluids and drive it in. Hard to say, but maybe batteries since it had been sitting.

Thanks for the reply! So if it is the batteries can I just hook it to a charger and charge the batteries to get the engine light to go off?

It could be a hundred things, but drive it first to see if the batteries charge back up. Do you use a fuel stabilizer in it?

Am I missing something here? You need to scan for codes.

Ditto on scanning for codes. Conventional wisdom is if the light is solid it's OK to drive for a short distance, but if it's flashing shut it down.

get an OBDII code reader and plug it in to the datalink below the dash and to the left of the steering column.

Otherwise, some autoparts stores like O'Reilly's and others will read codes for you for free.

My check engine light came on back in Jan/Feb. Guess what I got as a
post Christmas present?

My 08 build truck used to have the check engine light come on reguarly. When I had the codes checked it was a exhaust filter hiccup everytime. The light would go out after a few days. A Spartan program with the DPF delete has fixed all that.
