If I do headers and Y pipe only, will it change the sound? And what are the performance advantages without doing mufflers to.(want the performance but not a dramatic noise level increase)And any body delt with high performance cats? Any input would be helpful.
Sounds like you have a v190. Do the Y and replace the exhaust. I did and she barely purrs. From 1000-1500 slight mellow sound but nothing else. For towing, she breathes easier and makes more power to move on the highway. Plus, just driving it is better.
Oh, dont forget about the tuner with performance and towing tunes from 5 Star. That changes the character of the vehicle dramtically.
I just did headers & y-pipe on my 5.4L. I didn't notice any noise with respect to the exhaust sound. But, there is considerably more noise from under the hood. Sounds just like an exhaust leak but the consensus I've found is that it is a product of the thin-walled headers.
Also, the necked down y-pipe was supposedly designed to eliminate exhaust "flutter" in the V10s. Not sure if any of the V10 owners here have noticed this after the y-pipe swap. Hopefully, some will chime in about this.
