So on my last camping trip towing my 7k lb travel trailer, my EOT's got to 254*+. Either my Edge Insight CS or the oil temp sending unit stopped at 254*, as it would never read any higher than that but I know the heat was still building.
The ECT would get to 200* or so, but once the fans clutch locked it would come down to 188-190*. EOT's would not change unless I slowed down.
Now, my EGR & Oil Coolers were "supposedly" replaced 12 mos. ago (2k miles) under warranty when I had the truck in for a STC failure (no-start). I currently have no puking, coolant loss, or smoke.
Is there "anything" else that could cause EOT's to be this high other than the oil cooler being clogged? What would EOT's this high cause ... I've beem told it would melt plastic internals?
At any rate, dealer wants $2995 to change the EGR & Oil Coolers again and do a VC9 flush. A Ford Diesel Tech who works on the side said he'd do it for half that ... what get's me is this side-job Tech also said the warranty dealer probably never did the work that was on the RO … he said they probably did what the truck came in for (HPOP STC), then the Tech added the other job and pocketed it all.
I can not speak to the honesty of the tech or dealership that dd your work. I can tell you that you are in dangerous territory with oil temps that high. I would be betting on a clogged oil cooler. That is why a coolant filter is so important. If you are not puking out the degas bottle your egr cooler may be ok. The oil cooler replacement cartridge is $216 from Ed the Parts Guy on this site. You should be able to get all the work done for $1500. Oops, that is what half of $2995 is. If you were here in Michigan, it would be around $1200 for my nephew to change it out.
Yeah .. I put one on 'bout 500 miles after the "supposed" oil cooler replacement. About 500-1000 miles after that I changed it; when I cut it open it was full of sand.
Have you been keeping up with your coolant filter changes? You still getting sand? If you have that much sand in your coolant you oil cooler probably quickly clogged again. You wouldn't be the first guy this happened to... If the sand has cleared up and you are not finding any more in the coolant filter you should be good to go after the next oil cooler change.
IMO I would not drive it with oil temperatures that high... The oil filter stand pipe can melt and ruin the engine.
