I don't know what pinging sounds like, but if it sounds like an annoying knock, then it's doing it. What should the timing be set as initially and what should the timing read once it's advanced?
Just keep turning it back a little bit till it quits pinging. Better yet, see if the instructions say this dist has a adjustable vacuum advance. If it does, adjust that till it quits making the noise, since disconnecting the vacuum line makes it go away.
If it doesnt do with vacuum advance disconnected or at wot, then it is your vacuum advance, they dont come set since there is no way to tell what your engine pulls for vacuum, therefore they made them adjustable, pull the tube, turn it counter clockwise for retarding it, clockwise for advancing, but u are too far advance so using a 3/32 allen key or is it 7/32 idk just find an allen key that fits in the tube side of the vacuum advance and turn it a few turns counterclockwise, drive test it, keep the allen key with you and adjust while driving, just pull over shut it off so you dont get your hand knocked off by the fan, i have came close got a few fingers before, and then adjust it some more till it stops pinging..... vacuum advance is for driveability and economy.
Can I screw the adjusting screw too far out or is there something that stops it. Also since the directions say 2* from factory should I retard or advance?
