Question Computer capabilities question

1993 Ford F150 4x4 Extended cab with the 302.... lost compression on a cylinder, so we got another 302 for it, minus the injection and oil pan. So, we moved the injection and oil pan from my original engine to this donor engine and dropped it in.

After firing it up, the engine ran horribly. Figured out that we left the knock sensor out... That helped, but now we have a huge problem with spark knock... all the time. Can't seem to time it out either...

After a little investigation, it appears this engine was out of a 89 Mustang, maybe a H.O. if those were made in '89. On top of that, it has been gone through and built up. Roller rockers, big cams, and it's rumored to have higher compression pistons and forged rods.

So, if the engine is built like that, would the computer in this pickup be able to compensate? Or am I going to have to get a chip for it?

Computer capabilities question

Well I've found that I'm going to have to convert the truck to MAF system.... the challenge is the fact that I have the AODE tranny.

Has anyone here ever done the conversion? I'd rather not have to run two processors like most kits set you up with. Anyone know what processor would work to run the MAF conversion and the AODE?

You won't need to convert it, not if you chip it. A properly programmed chip for your changes will work with speed density. The problem is speed density doesn't react well to cam changes with stock program (MAF isn't nearly as sensitive).

The way to handle it is to get a dyno pull that includes an accurate air/fuel ratio chart. Then we program a chip, and "tweak it" after a second dyno pull with the chip installed.

Computer capabilities question

I am assuming you mean spark knock. I had this problem with an '88 302 with injection that drove me crazy. Turned out that cyliders #7 & #8 fire in that order, if the plug wires are next to each other #7's spark crosses to #8 causing preingnition and a spark knock that can not be cured with timing or additional egr. After highway miles with this spark knock, the exhaust valve was burned on #8 causing no compression.
You may also want to double check the firing order on the donor 302, there is a difference between my '88 and my '94.
hope this helps
