well i have been noticeing lately there's been a squeaky noise coming from under my hood. i believe this happens only when the block is cold but i'm not entirely sure i'll verify here in a little bit. i sounds like it's center mass. so i'm thinking maybe a pulley, the belt, or maybe even the fan. i have no idea. what do ya'll take of this? (F350 2001 7.3)
Ps. truck is just about bone stock except for a straight pipe/ muffler delete.
alright, i checked it out. it's constantly "clicking". it does so in a rythmaticall ?? way as the belt rotates. it seems to be comming directly from the center. however i'm having a hard time telling if it's either the center main pulley, the one above it or below. but definantly one of the pullies in the center. i didn't see anything out of the normal, I.E. loose pully or anything. is there any form of test i can try to find out which pulley is causing the problem and how to fix it? thanks.
I'd take the belt off, turn all the pulleys by hand and see if any of them wobble or if anything seems unusual. IIRC the two pulleys directly in the center of the motor are the waterpump pulley and the crank pulley under that.
In my experience, when you have a pulley acting up, the pump its attached to might be on its way out. Pay particular attention to the idler pulley (the same one you'll turn to pull the belt out) make sure it isn't backing out away from the block. Also make sure your power steering pump is in good shape.
You can try spraying your serp with belt dressing just to make sure its not a squeaky belt.
Get a section of hose. Heater hose or garden hose will work good. Put one end to your ear and put the other end near where you think the noise is coming from. You will be able to locate the sound with that.
i'm ashamed to say this, but i don't have much experience with pulleys and the belt. never had to change one...soo if i could get some detailed instructions, i'd appreciate it. isn' there a certain tool i'll need to put slack into the belt to get it off the pulleys? i have a leaking HPOP..if that might have anything to do with it. also i noticed my antifreeze reservior was low on fluids the other day. i refilled, and it's dropped a little more. i've looked for leaks, but to no avail, i did smell a hint of sweetness, so i might have a leak on the reservoir some where, i'll keep a look out on that and use some JB weld for that.

Its just a 1/2 drive, the idler pulley will have a drive receiver in it. Push the wrench down towards the passenger's side (left) and the idler pulley will turn and allow you to loosen the belt.
If you smell sweetness, and you say there is a squeak coming from the center of the motor..I'd pay REAL close attention to that water pump. The weep hole may be seeping and the pulleys do squeak when they are on their way out. Take a clean rag and run it up against the block BETWEEN the crank pulley and the water pump pulley..make sure you don't see any fresh green ooze on that rag.
...just a thought...if my waterpump is going out would that explain the devouring of my antifreeze from teh reservoir ?
Indeed..if that weep hole is leaking..yes.
However, I should note that on these trucks, the natural settling point for the coolant is level with the motor (physics) and will almost never stay at the "full" level on the reservoir because of how high it sits. Several of us have noticed our trucks will do this even without a leak. This is why I want you to check to see if that weep hole is leaking
lol too late....and sure enough it's the water pump. i didn't have to check under the pulley. off to the right side of the first large pulley i noticed yellow gunk. as i looked around sure enough there was antifreeze comming from the sensor, and from the right side of the pump some where....so now what ?
