Ok, so I tore apart my front end yesterday to do Guzzles Needle Bearing Lube. When I took everything apart, I also found both my axle dust ( splash) shields were rotted & broken apart. Being it was late & I figured i'd never find new ones.. after reading a little on here.. I decided to not put them back on. I put the passengers side back together, then went & did the drivers side. As I was tightening the 4 bolts on the hub, I found it was easier to spin the u-joint so I could get the socket on. I was able to spin it the whole time on the passenger side. The drivers side is a different story. Upon tightening the las little bit, the u-joint gets really tight & I can barely move it by hand. I took it apart 3 times trying to see if something was binding up, rusted.. still basically the same result.
Now it has me wondering.. Is this normal & am I being paranoid? Is it that I am finally tightening everything up installing the 2nd hub? Or is the lack of 2 dust shields causing my problem? It now has me thinking that the thickness of 2 dust shields would allow everything to be pulled in farther & binding things up?? I just hate to put it together to find that things are to tight & have problems down the road
You should be able to turn the shaft's easy, just a little resistance is normal, make sure your not in four wheel drive. Also you do need to fix the dust shield's or you grease job won't last long.
