I found a guy selling a front axle he claims to be a Dana 60, but out of a 1979 F350, but I thought (which I could be wrong) these where just 8 lug Dana 44 axles, did they have a Dana 60 back then? I was told that there were no Dana 60 axles until the '87 F350, was my source incorrect?
Ask the guy to measure the diameter of the locking hubs, and for any information off of the tag attached to the diff cover bolts. Also there is a number stamped on the face of the drivers side tube, called the BOM, bill of material. The tag will look something like this.
The number stamped on the tag will match the axle stamping on the tube.

The D44HD's also have the huge 4.5" hubs and are often times mistaken for a D60 but the BOM as masterbeavis noted will set you straight, i'll also add 9/16" diff cover bolts=D60, 1/2" diff cover bolts=D44.
I asked for a pic of the ID tag and this is what I got in response:
"78 79 dana 60 ford f350 was a king pin every ford d60 after that was a **** ball joint axle and as for d44 are small any idiot can tell a d44 from a d60"
So I decided to pass on the sale. Totally unprofessional.

There is no such thing as a 1978 F350 with 4WD, cuz...the first year Ford offered an F350 w/4WD was in 1979.
1973 and later Dana 60 Axle ID tags:
The Ford ID tag was under one of the bolts that retains the inspection cover to the housing. Do not be surprised...if it's missing.
The Dana ID tag is bolted (2 bolts) to the housing to the left (rear) to the right (front) of the inspection cover.
The tag is about 2" x 1/2" and has a Dana 7 or 8 digit ID number on it, like this: 603010-1, or this: 603010-11.
I don't give a hoot what some internet site sez, cuz I know I'm correct.
Take a look-see in the 1973/79 Ford LIGHT Truck Parts Catalog. See if you can find any SERIES or MODEL code, or any part number that relates to a 1978 F350 w/4WD.
Lotsa luck, cuz there was no such thing. Previous F350's w/4WD were all conversions, usually done by Marmon-Herrington.
btw: This parts catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com. Make sure it's the LIGHT truck catalog, the heavy truck catalog is F500 and larger.
