I just took out the old speedometer cable and replace with a NOS Ford cable correct for my year. The old fitting leaked some at the housing into the tail shaft and the new one leaks even faster. I'd have a 48oz. margarine tub full in about two weeks. That is two quarts in two weeks leaking out. That is a lot. Is there something missing here that I don't know about? Couldn't even find a diagram on the CD for the F series.
At least I am batting .500 since I managed to change out a power window motor in the Park Lane even though the manual talks only about manual windows. Took over an hour just to figure out how to access the three screws attaching the motor to the regulator.
Excellent question. Fluid has leaked (very slowly) from the speedo cable on my truck for as long as I've owned it. "Quirk of these old Fords" was the answer I've been given whenever I ask about getting it stopped.
Is the O ring in place? There should be no leakage and it is not normal.
Garbz
What O ring? There never was one in the old and not in the new. I suspected as much but since I couldn't locate a parts diagram there was no way to see. So if there is an O ring the question is how unique the part is in order to get one?
87036S94 .. Speedometer Cable O Ring-11/16" I.D. / Available from Ford
Fits a gazillion car/truck applications from the 1950's thru today. Your Cougar/Mustang/Parklane uses the same one.
You can order from a local dealer, but these come in a package of two that has an MSRP of $7.00.
MSRP each: $3.50. When dealers have to special order a part they do not stock, the usual M/O is the customer has to buy the entire package.
Or, you can buy just one from these closest sources to you that have stock:
W. C. SANDERSON FORD in Healdsburg CA has ONE = 707-433-3318.
HOLDER FORD in Lakeport CA has TWO = 800-635-8331, extension 7.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
PECK ROAD FORD TRUCK in Whittier CA has TWO = 562-692-7267.
Peck is 10 minutes from me, if you cannot find one anywhere else, I'll waltz over there, get one, then mail it to you in an envelope.
The price for the whole tamale will be less than 3 bucks, since I can buy the o-ring for $2.10.
Thanks, for the number Bill. I took a look at Green Sales to see how many they had and it was a lot. Those two dealers up here are more than an hour away. Since it may also be the same reason the Park Lane has a similar leak I think I am going to order 1/2 dozen of them so I never have this issue again in any of the Fords.
