I am seeing this brand of oil advertised a lot in my automotive magazines and was wondering how they compare to the other oils available. They say the zinc and phosphorous levels are higher than other oils. Any input from people who have used it or suggestions?
It's one of the best oils for flat tappet cams which require the zinc. Not good for catalytic converters, which is the reason it's been taken out of most oils.
That would be correct. Lot of good oils out there that won't damage your converter. At least this is what the government is telling us.
Thanks for the info. I was curious about the oil, seeing it is being advertised a lot. I run Pennzoil Platinum in my Expedition, so know I am already protecting her with one of the best oils out there. Thought I'd try the Brad Penn if it was good for my engine, but will pass due to the cat issue and stick with the PP. If it ain't broke theory, right? Thanks again for the replies and info!
American Refining Group makes Brad Penn. They also have a license from Chevron for the Gulf brand. Somehow, the Kendall brand was sold to Conoco. Brad Benn racing is supposedly the original Kendall GT-1 formula, but so what?
Some folks in the aircooled VW world also pay shipping charges to get this "miracle" green oil.
If all you are after is ZDDP to protect flat-tappet cams in race or older street engines, there are better ways to do that, easier and cheaper, too. How about Chevron Delo 400 or Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic?
Otherwise, its an inferior product to what is currently out there from the major brands. Almost all the base oil they make is solvent extracted Group I, ancient technology. See Kendex Base Oils from the Products pull down. For a little extra zinc, you are giving up 20 years of advancement in the rest of the formula.
For a 2002 Expy, I cant think you can do any better than Shell's Pennzoil Platinum you are now using.
