I know I have been over this before, but I cannot find the right thread. I have a 66 F100 with what appeared to be 69 axles. IE I put the right brakes and drums on it and had a 1/2 gap at the back when the drums hit the axles. I put 69 brakes and drums on and everything fit great.
New issue, the right rear bearing is dragging, and so I want to replace both bearings.
Are they the same as the 66?
Is there any way now that I can verify what I believe to be true that these axles are out of a 69?
Are the housings the same for 66, and 69?
I am pretty sure from what I can find they are 28 spline axles. IE they have the sealed bearing, not the tapered. Does this correctly ID them as 28 Spline axles?
Now that is a perfect ND question. I run the same basic setup on my 66 for the larger brakes.
I remember swapping the backing plate out, and the axles don't go as deep into the rear as before, but I don't think any changes were made to the bearings.
Can you remove it and take it with you for replacement?

As John says... if you replace the backing plate along with the 66 drums they will fit. what i remember reading the axles are the same the difference is in the backing plate offset.
yea, i belive the housings are the same up to 1972.
Is there somewhere I can find out the length of the axles, to verify or refute what I believe to be true? I know how long the axle shafts are, but I don't know how long the shafts are for each year. If you have this information I would really appreciate it.

1957/67 F100: B7TZ4234A .. Axleshaft-28 splines / 29 11/16" long from splined end to inside of flange / 1 1/4" splined end diameter.
1968/72 F100: C8TZ4234A .. Axleshaft-28 splines / 29 5/16" long from splined end to inside of flange / 1 1/4" splined end diameter.
Okay, another question my axles don't seem to have any place of an axle seal, and I seem to recall the mount brackets had an indent for the axle seals on some of these rear ends. The brackets on mine don't seam to have seals or a place for the seals. Any ideas? Did 66 not have seals? Let me know.
the seal sets inside the axle housing behind the bearing.
But! be careful getting them out, if you scratch up the seal seat area it will leak.... I know!
Look in my album for the picture, under Cooper. I found this picture in the parts book, and the part I am having an issue with is the 4020 retainer. Mine does not have the cup shown here. It is flat more like the 1001, (I know the 1001 is a gasket) I am just saying the part that is meeting the purpose of the 4020 on my truck is flat and there is no cup to hold the seal. Is this normal in a 66 9" rear end??

Reason: Picture didn't attach
Bill thanks for the info, that is what I thought when you are pressing new bearings on you remove everything. When reinstalling, first the 4020 retainer plate, with the 4 holes for mounting, then the seal, then the bearing (Pressed), and then the ring (Pressed). Let me know if I am off on this. I just don't have space for the seal unless I change the 4020 plates.
