Need advice; gas vs diesel for work

I think the problem is the math skills.
When you are buying new and plan to drive 5000 a year for 2-3 years, than the few thousands dollars more for diesel option is questionable, even knowing you will get your money back at the sale.
When you are buying used, like I did and plan to drive it for over 100,000 miles more, you don't need better math skills than 2nd grader to figure out what is good for you

Not to start a WAR, BUT,Go With a Gasoline engine, it will be cheaper on maints.
the small diesel engines in smaller trucks, are prone to a lot of maint, parts are expensive, good techs are hard to come by on the smaller diesels engines, I have worked on a lot of Diesel engines, Cats, Cummins, Detroit Diesels, IH, John Deere, Case, Kubota, to name a few, and smaller diesel engines in most cases, dont hold up very well,So, in a smaller truck, F350 F450 and down, i would use gasoline, I KNOW there are some that have gotten great service from their PS diesels, but its not the norm. Just look at this site and others on the PS diesels and you will see what I Mean, I Know I have upset some PS users, Sorry about that

If you want them to hear you comming go diesel.
If you want to sneak up on them get a V-10.
No seriously if you really don't need the diesel power then gas is the best option.
Both the diesel and gas are good trucks, the cost factor is the decideing factor now between the diesel and V-10. Usually a diesel is several thousand dollars more now. Usually to the tune of about 3000.00. Maybe even more. Most all the 6.0's have the problems worked out of them as most all the V-10 have exhaust manifold studs repaired and plug thread issues repaired.

We are soon going to be trying to outfit a new crew with a 250 pickup instead of the box van (trying to find a way to avoid the DOT hassles of the heavier truck). My business partner, who deals more with the trucks and maintenance stuff, wants to try out a gas truck vs the PSD. His argument is that #1, we are having a tough time finding reliable mechanics to work on our PSD trucks. We have access to several good 'gasser' mechanics. #2, he feels that it is much cheaper to fix or replace the motors or trannys on the gas trucks vs the PSD trucks.
My worry is that we are pretty tough on our trucks and I wonder how the gas trucks overall will holdup over time. In either case we'd be loooking at trucks in the '99 - 2003 year range.

These discussions turn sucky quickly it seems. To just answer the OP with an opinion I'll say that for your situation (business) with multiple vehicles I'd get a gasser with V10. The reason being that when diesels do get age on them they can become maintenance intensive. And a lot times when there is a problem diagnosing them can be the hardest part. You yourself said it's hard to find a good diesel mechanic, and it is for light duty trucks. It sucks but taking a diesel to the dealer can be painful because thier own mechanics have a hard time with them. But you take a gasser in there and you are more apt to get the problem fixed the first time and probably cheaper. This is all assuming that you are buying something used and out of warranty. If you're buying new and will have them until the warranty and then trade for new again, then it's up to you to decide. The diesel option on the new ones is so much more I couldn't say if the cost is worth it anymore.
Having said all that, I personally would stick with my 7.3 PSD but that's because I do all the maintenance myself and consider myself more capable than most mechanics I could take it to, and I don't even really know that much...

I'll try to make this quick. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
We have several 7.3 PSD trucks (mostly in the form of 350 or 450 box vans). Our crews typically consist of 3 or 4 guys, their stuff, and a trailer (maybe 7K or 8K lbs). These trucks run maybe 200 - 300 miles up the road at the beginning of the week, then run around to different jobs in the area during the week, then back home 200 - 300 miles.
