Finally going to do it. How much should i raise the engine/drivetrain assy to get the pan out? Can i just loosen the engine mounts or do they have to come off the bolt? Can i also just loosen the trans mount or take the nut off all the way? Is this the best way? Can i do it differently? I dont mind dropping the pickup tube etc, just need to know who has done it and what is the fastest and bestest(lol had to) way to get the job done!?
step 1 buy beer
step 2 call some buddies over
step 3 stare at it
step 4 drink more beer
step 5 get some wrenches and stuff
step 6 wait for someone else to chime in as i have never done a pan gasket on one of these.lol
step one if it keeps enough oil in it to have oil pressure it ain't leaking bad enough to fix it.
The fastest easyest way is to pull the motor you aren't gonna get the clearance to get the pan out. Some people have unbolted the pan and scraped the old silicone out then put new silicone in but that sounds harder than pulling the motor.
These pan look about like the sam set up on the small block gassers. With the 4x4 trucks all we ever did was take the nuts off the mounts jack the engine up as high as we could (till the carb was hitting the firewall) drop the pan, reach in and pull the pickup tube. The pan was then able to be wiggled out. New pan and reverse the above. The hardest part was getting the gasket to stay in place.
Man if all it is is the pan gasket that is a piece of cake. I thought you were swapping in a new pan. You don't even need to pull the pickup tube for this one. To help hold the new gasket in place use some regular sewing thread to tie it to the pan thru a hole in each corner. It helps.
ok, not as easy as you would hope. believe me.... if you really wanna get it out without having to pull the engine out totally, then its gonna take some work. you gotta remove the 4 body bolts and the 2 for the radiator core support and jack the cab up because with it being down, you wont get enough to get it out. honestly, its more trouble then its worth. its easier to pull the whole engine OR pull the tranny, then you can lift the engine up enough to get the pan off the back. either way, your looking at a ton of work. ive got a 1.5" body lift and i still wouldnt have enough room to get it out by just lifting the engine with the tranny attached.
There isn't a gasket on these you can get an aftermarket cork one but from the factory they were siliconed on.
As for the pulling the cross meber I've heard in this forum if you do that the frame will move and you have to spend big bucks at a body shop to get it back in but in the powerjoke7.3 forum they say the frame wont move. either way don't use grade 8 bolts go to your loccal truck shop and get frame bolts they will take all the flexing and twisting these frames do.
Alright. By the look of the pan it was close to the standard resump I always messed with. Now I gotta wonder. If they didn't use gaskets on these the nmy engine musta be apart before I got it. It had a 4 piece gasket on it (rubber ends and cork sides).
if i go the route of just dropping the pan down and scraping the old crap out, then putting in new, how do you get all the old out of the bottom of the pan that might fall in? Man this is the dumbest friggin setup. I dont think i will bother till after i sort the rear yoke and eliminate the vibrations. Still looking for one, the new(er) truck might just get the chop job and then i can build it up later. lol
according to his sig its a 7.3 international doesn't list a gasket for the 7.3 or 6.9 maybe ford put them on the 6.9s but my 7.3 had the factory blue silicone wich was replaced with the grey and my 8.5 6.9 I bought out of an IH school bus had the blue stuff as well actualy that one may have had a gasket I can't remeber.
