i'm posting for a freind. he has a 2001 f550 7.3 CC DRW w/ a custom utility bed. he ordered the truck w/ real nice set of 19.5' alcoa alum. rims w/ i think 14 ply tires. heres the problem we beach camp with our campers, (his is a fifth wheel) and he cant air down his tires enough to tow on the sand. he has someone else meet him at the beach and tow him out and then back in. he also doesnt use the truck to it full potential, so a lighter weight rating wont hurt him. so hes thinking of taking off the 19.5" rims and tires and replace them w/ 16" 's. i know its a step backwards but its what would work for him.he is o.k. w/ steel rims. is it possible? if so what does he need to buy?
thanks,
-ed
Those rims are probably interesting to someone on here. If I had some money laying around I'd claim them myself.
I don't think a 19.5 based tire is going to "soften" for deflated beach driving. It's just not going to happen.
I believe the brake design on the 550s are different enough that a 16" rim won't fit correctly. Your friend could find some aftermarket rims for the truck. I know there's a 17" rim available from Rockstar and similar companies...
Might try talking to "kwik" about his brake caliper size and what might fit. I believe he has a 550.
You can't run smaller diameter rims on an F550. The brakes are HUGE on the 550's. He might find something in a 20" to suit the purpose, but will need a custom bolt pattern.
