Differential question

My truck came with an open 3.55 differential and I hate it. I was at the junkyard the other day and they have a 98 gas f-250, it has a 3.73 LS rear-end with disc brakes that I could get a pretty good deal on. Does anyone know if those differentials will fit an OBS truck? I dont know if the diesels and gassers had different rear-ends.

As long as it's the 10.25 or 10.5 sterling the diff will fit.

I'll go back out there and check it out. The truck is sittin in the dirt without the wheels so I cant see under it, the tag in the drivers door should have that info right?

The only difference between the diesel and gas rear ends in the same era, are the yokes at best. You can definately swap from a gas diff and diesel diff! As for the 98, pull a little research! Check the axle model from the donor, if its the sterling model, I think you are set to go.

98, isn't that the light duty 3/4 ton? I think so, bet they are different.

If it's from a NBS then the wheels won't fit...metric. They may even have 7 lugs if it's a 250HD.

Don't you mean if its a 250LD?

Don't you have to swap the whole rear axle and not just the differential?

What ever the rear end is your looking at it isn't going to work. If you don't like like your ratio change the ring and pinion and add your choice of locker. A used LS isn't going to give you much of an advantage in any case.

The pinons on the Gen 3 10.5 are different than a gen 2 10.25

If you pull the carrier from the gen 3, you'll have to go find a gen 2 pinion to go with it to swap it into your truck.

The Gen 3's incorporated a 3 spider differential which is stronger than the older first and second gen 2 spider setups.
