diff. gear change???

we went beach camping this past week with our camper. i've been thinking about changing my gears to help with towing, heres some info.
the truck...2000 f350 v10 CC 4wd 3.73 gears, 275/70/18 tires, sct x2, s&b air box. (2 adults,3children)
the travel trailer...32' crossroads quad bunk zinger, 9000lbs loaded.
i was going 65mph at 1800 rpm. i had to down shift now and again to keep up with traffic. whats the sweet spot (rpm) when towing with a v10.
thanks,
-ed

If your running 2100 at 65mph in OD that will be much better. You start getting into the torque curve good right around 2200.

Heres a link to calculator you can use. RICHMOND Street Performance Calculator

3.73 (rear gear)
65 (mph)
33.2 (" diameter)
.71 (OD Ratio)
= 1742 rpm @ 65mph

4.30
65
33.2
.71
= 2008 rpm @ 65mph

4.56
65
33.2
.71
= 2130 rpm @ 65mph

4.88
65
33.2
.71
= 2279rpm @ 65mph

The numbers will vary a little because the tires are not exactly 33.2". In my truck you can definatley feel when you get into the torque curve around 2200rpm on the highway. Since your truck has a lift and is a hevier CC it may not be as noticable for you as it is for me.

thanks for the info. looks like 56's or 88's. i also have a set of 16.5 x 9.75 rims w/ 35"x12.5" tires. i've been looking to get a set of 37" humvee tires...so the 4.88's might be the best choice. reps your way.

nothing less then 4:88s for you..

anyone lower will be a waste of money and not give you enuf return on your cash outlay.

Since you have even bigger tires in the future I agree 4.88s sounds like the best option. Depending on the miles on the truck, how long you plan to keep it and etc you may want to replace the seals and take a good look at the bearings. If you do any kind of offroading now would be a good time for a truetrac or a locking diff. Really starts to add up quick.

i dont off road at all. the truck has 70,000 miles and i do plan to hold on to it for a long time. my 8 year old son has already expressed a ton of intrest in it already. i'll have to start looking around for gears.

You can save some money going with Yukon gears for the rear 10.5" over the Ford gears. The Ford gears are almost double the price but are supposed to be quieter. I don't think Ford offers any gears for the D50 so Yukons for that.

You may want to throw an 08' aluminum diff cover into the price you tell the wife. The 4.88s will spin faster and make heat. Only around $50 give or take for the cover.
