I have a 99 4x4 EB Expy, and I live in the mountains and drive a lot of dirt roads which can be snowpacked in winter. At times I do need chains on all 4 tires.
Are there any pros/cons with the 4x4 EL Expy and snowpacked roads -- better or worse handling than the standard length, or pretty much the same?
Thanks guys for all your replies. I've decieded it has to be an EL. I looked around at the regular lengths and found some pretty good deals. We went to look at one last week. With the 3rd row up the kids stroller won't even fit in the back. Sort of makes the 3rd row pointless for us as we'd have to have it down all the time.
My only requirments have been leather seats, HD tow package and not black. My 66 Mustang is black, sees only nice weather and is still a pain to keep clean.
I've found a pretty nice looking '09 white XLT with HD tow, low miles and tan leather seats. We've previously been looking at the Eddie Bauer trim level. My questions is, will the 2 ride different? If it is just a 'trim level' then I'm assuming there is no change in ride (springs/shocks/sway bars) or sound proofing? Is all that the same? I can live without auto climate control and some plastic wood trim if I can get a good deal on the XLT.
So did you buy the white one? Is that any easier to keep clean than the black Mustang? Mine is the pearl white (off-white) and it shows dirt within minutes of washing it.

I would of liked white, both the white white and off white looked nice but I found the carbon metallic one and love it. It shows dirt and will look like crap in the winter but it matches my trailer perfectly. I love to wash cars so I'm not too upset although this thing is so big it'll see more car washes than my sponge!

Washing my vehicles is my "Me Time". I refuse to take any of mine to the car wash. My wife has on accoassion, but know she gets an earful from me when she gets home. I tell her it is due to what happens to the finish, but I really just enjoy washing them by hand. It also helps me to "know" the vehicles and see all of the little scratches and dents that happen over the lives of the cars/trucks.
I bet the carbon looks great. I wasn't sure I would like the pearl white, but I like it better than the dark copper EB that we used to have now that I have gotten used to it. But I constantly see all of the little spots of dirt and want to give it a bath.

In a 'Eric Bana' way I love rubbing my hands over the paint and in all the crevases too. I just don't have time to always wash them the way I want. Winter in MI is way to fricken cold to hand wash so its a quick blast underneath at the power wash and through the car wash. You need the blower at the end of the car wash to get the water off. Hand washing or using the soapy brush at the do it yourself place doesn't work here in winter because the water freezes as soon as it hits the air.

I hear you. And I can't imagine what the winters are like in MI. I have only been there in the summer. But i am known to wash my vehicles in 20 degrees with snow on the ground. But the water does not freeze instantly. That is nuts!
We also debated long and hard as to Which Expy to get, but for us there was no option but an EL. We finally settled on an 07 EL Limeted 4x4, pearl white and really love it. Sure, dirt showes a little, but no where near as much as if it were a darker color. Congratulations on your new family member Mustang1966, I hope you continue to love yours as much as we love our little Pearl.
We have a black 08 EL Limited and it handles my kids, all the crap the kids need with them, and all my wifes stuff while cruising at 80 mph, with the video playing going, the GPS tracking, the AC blasting and the smoothest ride I have ever had in a truck! It does the same in deep snow (without the AC on however)
I suspect the ride is smooth because i am crushing bumps!
Needless to say, I love this truck and the EL adds lots of space without any handling issues from the extra length
While I am not currently seriously looking for a new Expy, I've started to see what they have, should my 2002 ever decide to die on me. One question I have for those of you who have towed some weight with your IRS Expeditions. I have come to like my solid rear axle and how it handles when towing my 23' walkaround fishing boat. Some of the newer IRS Expeditions I have seen towing large items concern me, with how the rear tires are angled inward at the top and outward at the bottom, like an independent suspension typically does. Do you notice any uneven or odd tire wear from towing large or heavy items? I'm kinda thinking I may go with a 4-door F-150 to get the solid rear axle, but if there is no noticeable tire wear from the Expedition owners on here, I will probably stay with an Expedition. Input or thoughts? Thanks!
I personally think the longer wheel base gives a smoother overall ride, but then again I have a limited and it rides better than the XLT or Eddie Bauer IMO.
Not sure about towing since I have never towed with it. I am just guessing but would think there would not be too much difference other than the EL may weigh a bit more.
If you need the tow rating for my EL, I will look it up for you.
The non-EL has a tow rating of 9000 (4x4 w/HD tow package), that is 300lbs more than the EL. I won't be anywhere near the maximum so that doesn't really bother me.
I have heard the longer the wheelbase the sturdier the tow but I have no idea what the formula is. Are the extra few inches of the EL going to make any noticeable difference with a 24' trailer? <!-- / message --> <!-- controls -->
