I have a 95 F150 with manual locking hubs. Mech. took tranny off to fix rear main seal. Now it feels like hubs are always engaged (they aren't locked) and you can shift Tcase into 4wd while tranny is in drive etc.
What might be problem? It was working fine before he took it off though the Tcase shifter was sticky going into 4W low.
Thanks.
Christopher
Confirm the T-Case is in 2WD mode, then ask a friend to drive the truck very slowly while you observe front drive shaft through the left front wheel, it should not move.
Is moving? remove front drive shaft and repeat test, Try to observe if front differential is moving or T-Case drive is moving.
If front drive still moving means Hub are locked.
If T-Case drive shaft is moving means it is in 4WD mode.
Easiest way to check is reach in under the truck and try and turn the front drive shaft by hand, if you can turn it its all free, the hubs are unlocked and the tc is in 2H. Keep in mind simply moving the truck forward and back the front drive line may still tend to spin do to inertia, even if not engaged.
If you can't turn it by hand you have a lockout or tc issue to investigate.
Removing the trans/tranfercase to replace the rear seal wouldn't have effected anything in the front end, other then removal/re installation of the front drive shaft.
And it was probably only disconnected at the TC end if its the u bolt type, if slip joint type at that end it may have been completely removed. Depending on the guy/s doing the work might not have made any difference how they handled that aspect of the job, may have left it attached at the forward end either way, I know I would have.
