I recently bought an 89 f150 ex cab 300i6 5 sp. with dual tanks. My rear tank works good, Today I filled both tanks completely full. The front tank started leaking all over the place. and the gauge seems to not be correct. after most of it leaked out it still claims its way over full. How ever it is correct for the rear tank. Any ways the real problem is my front tank will work for a while then cut off like its out of gas. so I switch to rear for awhile and try the front, I drove for 2 days on the front tank once and other times it will only give me a half hour. does it have its own fuel pump. any Ideas will be very helpfull
the truck has 3 fuel pumps, 1 in each tank, they are low pressure, and one high pressure pump on the fuel rail, the flowing over problem is a common issue with 89 (and earlier? ) trucks due to the fuel tank selector switch likes to stick and it will dump the return line into the front tank while its pumping off the rear tank, causing it to overfill ( or it can happen in the opposite way i would guess) hope it helps

thanks thats somthing i did not know. but my front tank needs replaced, it over flowed befor i started it and leaked all day I filled the rear all the way up the filler hose and then the front all the way up, It was leaking from the top rear of the front tank and the front mid section (on the seam) I noticed it after i hung the nozzle up unfortunatly waste of money. I am glad D.E.P didnt see me lol. is there a way to lube up the switch if that happens to me. or does it need replaced
pretty much what i have found is that once you open it up the o-ring seal is useless and ( i atleast ) another o-ring that size cannot be found for it.. right now i got mine pulled off and thrown in the bed, and just jumped the rear tank lines ( front tank sending unit doesnt work ) autozone has a "universal" type for like 40 dollars but you have to hack your fuel line fittings, and the only one i found that is a factory direct fit is around 70 was actually one that was listed to a posting i had asked
