So the on-going debate here is whether or not its worth buying name brand vs. off-brand from the nearest auto store.
I'm not one to buy name brand, especially if it only has a marginal benefit. But at the same time, life has also taught me that you get what you pay for.
But here is the thing...with the rebate you can get an acknowledged top line shock for $65 each (which includes shipping.) The off brand is going to cost me $50 each if I pick them up at the store. The difference between the two ends of the spectrum for a whole new set of shock absorbers is $60.
For some, $60 might be the deal breaker...but not for me. $60 doesn't even fill the tank on my Ex. So I consider it cheap insurance that I won't be replacing them anytime soon.
like the silly v10's boast about how much better they are...
maybe we need to compare trucks and IQ's at the same time
It wasn't really a debate until certain individuals felt they had to pee in the pot....
I never was banned and I was only giving my viewpoint which is what forums are about. Other than offroading I don't understand what is so high tech about a truck hitting a bump, dipping down, and rebounding. That was my whole point right there. Maybe I am missing something
The last thing I would do would be to rain on someones parade for no reason.
OK. Just got my Fox Racing shocks in and I'll let everyone know if it matters what kind of shocks you get. In my case, with my tires aired to specs to help with mpg, its a rough ride sometimes and my passenger's insist that they're going to file a lawsuit against me for neck pains. I currently have ProComps and want to jump on the Rancho band wagon, but they didn't have a shock to work with my setup.

Actually, I was trying to be helpful by stating my experiences from my new shocks that I had just installed. You never stated what your experiences were with your Ex and shock absorbers. Nothing specific. These are very heavy vehicles, you cannot just put any shock on these things! I am still trying to understand your answer to my statement about being able to adjust the shocks to my differing situatiions! So many times once you get past the first 3 or 4 answers to the post somebody is taking the post on some different tack and it is another 3 or 4 posts before it becomes about the original post again. I appreciate "been there , done that" conversations. That is far more helpful to probably 95% of the posters here. Just my observations.
How about the cheapest shocks from the closest auto parts store? That's what I so and they always outlast the vehicle and give a perfect ride. I don't understand why everyone wants to dump money into hype???????
This is the original post by EXv10. His statement was "what is the hpye". While the discussion was about what shocks offer good ride over varying duties i.e. towing ,general, and offroad. The hype is that stock or "walmart" do not cover these aspects of driving long term. Although most people use their X"s for average daily driving many use them for work and recreation, hence the need for more advanced equipment. EXv10's piont was that he couldn't understand why people would spend the money on something he felt was not a noticable difference. Well to that point why does he spend thousands of dollars on photography equipment when the average person can't tell the difference between his $1200++ camera and the $60 dollar one Walmart sells. Truth is most people will never be able to tell the difference in the photo once it is printed. So why spend the money on thousands of dollars of "top of the line equipment" when nobody is going to know? When an individual is buying equipment for his multi-purpose vehicle he also wants something to perform better than the low grade stuff at Walmart. I personally would not put Walmart shocks on an 8000 lb vehicle. Seems a waste of money when they won't probably last two years or maybe three. When for $10-15 dollars more per shock you can INVEST in a high quality part that will be versital and longer lasting as well as built much sturdier for more usable applications. The original questions were looking for shocks that could handle towing and off roading. Walmat nothing is going to be better than proven upgraded aftermarket for those applications. As for the comment about looking back in 20 years thinking it was a poor choice to spend alittle extra on an aftermarket part well the same may be said about spending thousands more on cameras that few are going to be able to notice. Then who wasted more money in the end? All in perspective I guess......

You're way out in left field. My 6 lenses average $2,000 each and not to mention the 4x4 and 8x10 (film size) camera, etc. My photos range from 20x24 to 30x40" and many companies and hospitals have them framed (by me) and on their walls. I don't think I mentioned Walmart but I did say the nearest auto parts store which can supply you with a shock for an Ex. Of course offroading would require a different shock and if I spent 90% of my driving offroad I would use a different shock. I did say previously that the only shock I would consider would be an adjustable one but how many people with an Ex do a lot of offroading (I do some) and for towing half the time they would probably be good but how many people are going to climb under and adjust every time?. Actually I was referring to a daily driver which is what I do mostly but I do tow and offroad but I'm not going to spill my coffee at every bump just so my occasional offroading is a little better. My shocks are just standard shocks and they work very well and my truck tracks very well and it rides very smoothly. What I am saying is that shocks are blown out of proportion by the makers so they will sell and if you think about it, for normal driving, all they can do is make them stiffer and last a little longer. But not much longer because that is why you can buy rebuildable ones. Nobody in here is ever going to convince me that I need some super duper expensive shock for my Ex. Also, I can't believe you said nobody will know the difference between a Walmart photo and mine.

Dude, you are PROVING my piont! If you are going to have prints that large you habe to spend big bucks to get quality equipment to get them clear and crisp. If you are going to have the largest production SUV made, you don't put the shocks (or other equipment) that are designed for an Explorer. If your demands are greater as the guys posting the original question YOU GOTTA SPEND MORE to get more performance.
Would love to see some of the photos you shoot. THis is a beautifl country. Do you have a website to veiw?
