2 upgrades that are a must IMO are the 95-up pump and the center support bearing. If he is putting in a Surecure kit then he is going to be modding your pump for greater line pressure - the older pumps are not up to this. The weak stock pump is what ruined your TC in the first place. Be sure to get a TC with a drain plug in it, put a drain plug in the pan, then drain and refill every 25K miles and use plain Mercon fluid. Use a front pump seal with black or blue rubber, don't use the OEM gray one.
I rebuilt the E4OD trans in my '93 diesel myself and I spent almost $1500 just on parts, I did every upgrade in the list by Jungerfrosh plus a few more, so it can get spendy. But the pump and the center bearing are the most important IMO.
I specifically asked him about upgrading the pump. He said that the current pump is good once he mods it. Hope he's right becasue it's too late to do anything about it now, considering I'm getting it back when I get off work this evening. I don't know if he said that based on the condition of the current pump or just from general past experience. I don't know what color front seal he used; whatever came in the kit, I expect unless you have order it separately. Upgrading the center support bearing was one of the reasons he increased the original estimate. He put a TC in that has the drain plug. He's putting Mercon III in it and suggested 36k miles to change it. I expect to get more details on all this when I pick it up.
I sure like the idea of installing a drain plug in the pan. What a mess getting that thing off and on every time, not to mention the PITA of getting it to seal correctly every time. How hard is it to install a plug?
It's easy, you just drill a 1/2" hole in your pan and put in the plug. B&M sells a plug kit, it costs about $8 at my local Autozone. I had one in my Expedition and in my Bronco and they did not leak, just don't overtighten it.
So here's the results! I got the truck back last week and oh, man, I'm in love again! Rides great, shifts great, overall it's just great.
Here's the parts list.
Axiom torque converter
Sonnax Surecure kit
Master overhaul kit (I think he said this was Borg/Warner)
New ball bearing center support
New MLP
Reman solenoid pack
Merc/Dex III fluid
Total parts was just over $1350. Total labor was $700. After tax and a little extra to have the engine rear main seal replaced I was under $2200. He gave me a couple good discounts and I wrote him a check for $1971.
He also gave his standard warranty of 12k miles or 12 months.
