Thanks! I actually found the correct year tailgate now, for the same price.
It's a little rougher, but at least it's the correct year.
All the same, I'd hang onto the damaged gate. It may be repairable by the right guy - or someone could cut out the "correct" center section & weld it into a later gate to create a "correct" replacement. They haven't made these gates for 44 years...
Turn the damaged tailgate into a tailgate for a truck with a fithwheel plate. A guy from work did that with a much newer truck. We had a few damaged ones at work so he bought some steel and started cutting. After it was all painted up it looks great. Everyone asks him where he bought it.
I need a tailgate for my 66. There is one for sale nearby for a 70. Will it fit? I know it won't look right.
In September 1966, Ford obsoletedC4TZ9940700A (1964/66 F100/250 2WD & 1966 F100 4WD Styleside tailgate), replaced it with C7TZ9940700A (1967/72 F100/350 Styleside tailgate) for use as a service part replacement.
ALL the mounting hardware is exactly the same, only the styling is different.
Limegoldf100: The 1967/72 tailgate has the F O R D letters styled with a serif design, and a raised ovate scallop line surrounding them.
Because of these two differences, it's EZ to tell one tailgate from another. Bottom Line: While it fits, a 1967/72 tailgate does not look the same as 1964/66.
A new member of this forum just bought a 1966 F100. It looks very nice, but I didn't want to 'rain on his parade' by informing him that his truck has a 1967/72 tailgate on it.
