I just bought an 86 f150. It is 4wd and has the 300 cid motor with a 4 spd trans. It has the 208 transfer case but it wont work in hi. (not in 2-hi or 4-hi). when it is in hi and i let off the clutch, i hear a terrible noise coming from the transfer case area and the truck doesn't go anywhere. if it is in 4-low, it seems to operate fine with no noises or slipping. the guy i bought it from said that it just needed a chain put in it, but its my understanding that the chain only operates the front output. If that is the case, then it doesn't explain why it doesn't work in 2wd mode. has anybody had a similar problem to this or does any body have any ideas what could be causing it. does it just need a simple rebuild or should i look for a used one to swap it out with.
Make sure the shifter is working ok. Other than that, there must be something wrong inside the case.
Whether you tear it apart or get a used one would depend on how much time the truck can be down, and if you feel up to getting into the insides of the case.
it seems like the shifter is working ok. i can move it forward and back and it feels like it is working properly. Is there another way to check it to be sure though?

I suspected a shifter prob too but if you're saying it's ok I think you should go for a swap.
