Has anyone made a platform to stand on to work on the engine compartment? I'm thinking of building a heavy wooden platform that I can pull my truck into to. I'm not short but I'm not that tall either. It sure would be safer and more comfortable to work off of than a cooler or a bucket. I've even climbed in the engine compartment and sat down in it, not too comfortable either. After knocking my MSD control box plug loose and taking 30 min to figure it out I've had enough. What do ya'll do?
kinda wish I had one last night, was working on my buddies grandfathers '77 f250 4x4, trying to tighten up the steering and it was a weird setup (was sideways! locknut and screw were on the side of it??) but anyways, I had to try to find a footing on the Winch to get to it!
I have a little rubbermaid type plastic step stool that works really well. It has enough offset that I can lean all the way into the engine bay from the hood and it doesn't slide out from under me. When I'm going to be reaching for a long time, I used an old tool chest. It's one that you'd need a forklift to load if it was full, but small enough I can drag around on the floor. It has a lid the folds down over the drawers for security, and it has big grab handles that extend above the lid that keep me from going over the edge. It's stout, so it won't slip out from under me. It comes up to mid bumper on mine.
Also, my fender pad is a life saver when I'm leaning in to work on the engine. Sure, it protects the paint, but it also protects my belly from a bolt or radiator cap sticking me. Best $10 I've spent working on this dent.
If I didn't have those, I'd probably lay cinder blocks on the floor, enough that they didn't slide.
I usually will climb (while working in the engine bay) up and in the bay and sit (Im 5' 10"-180lbs) and sit where (if you had one) the second battery would sit on the drivers side next to the jack on the flat spot.
Other times, if its just easier, ill straddle the top of the radiator and let my left foot sit on the bumper and my right foot against the inner fender below the battery.
But thats just me, and my truck has a 4" lift sooo...
my grandpa had a wooden platform he stood on when he was the owner of my F250.
i tend to sit in the engine bay or on the push bar.
i am going to make a wooden platform like my grandpa had soon though...
