I have a 1991 Ford F250 4X4 Supercab, A/T, 7.3 Diesel. The Steady Bearing gave out on me the other day. I could hear lots of screeching sounds and looked under and the rubber was all collapsed and pushed up the drive-shaft a bit. I took it into a garage (Canadian Tire) and they put a new one on. As I drove it out of the parking lot I could still hear that screeching sound once in awhile. After driving it a bit and it started vibrating, I looked under and the rubber was all collapsed again and had ridden up the drive-shaft at least an inch. The bearing still seems good though. The drive-shaft was out of the transmission a inch or two more than usual.
I would really like to know what is causing this to happen? My suspension seem tight so my axles is not moving. I did notice after taking it apart tonight that the front universal joint is worn out, but doubt that this could cause the problem.
Any suggestions/comments would be much appreciated. Thanks
if the universal is bad, it will throw the driveshaft out of balance and tear the carrier bearings isolator rubber apart.
Ok. I will take your word for it. The new one I put in seems to be working. It never came with a clip on top of it (from bolt hole to bolt hole) though and am now wondering if NAPA sells that model that way. I will have to wait until they get some new one's in to compare.
