Ok, here is the scenario..I recently picked up a '65 F-100 with a 390..The guy claimed that he had been the owner for the last 12 or so years, and that it had been sitting for the last 5 of those years. He said that he would go out periodically and start it..So, I bring it home, rebuild the carb. (2bbl), buy new points, coil, starter solenoid and battery..I got it started tonight, but first, when it was at the point where it would halfway start (while I was mashing the gas), it was making a "scraping" sound. It sounded like it was coming from the flywheel/starter area..(So, I was thinking that maybe the bendix wasn't disengaging, although I've never had a ford do that) So, I finally adjusted the carb enough that it would start right up, but it still has a persistent growl/scrape sound..Similar to a bearing seizing, or metal to metal scraping..
It is a 4 speed, and was in neutral..
Could it be something in the clutch system that is rubbing?? The engine seems to idle fine, and has limited smoke (I have no idea how many miles the engine has..)
you discribe what sounds like a throwout bearing or pilot bearing noise to me...
see if the noise changes when you press on the clutch pedal about an inch or so
if the sound changes it could be the problem.
Hey, just wanted to give an update..I got it started again, and pushed the clutch in and out..The noise went away, when the clutch was out, and started making noise as the clutch was pressed..So, I am pretty sure that you were spot on with your diagnosis! Thanks!
Found if the 65's set for extended period of time the throwout bearing will make simular noise and tends to go away when driven a few miles. Also suggest adjusting clutch pedal. May want to take a look inside the fork boot, easier said than done, some throwout bearings have a gease zerk fitting.
mine has the same prob after a new throwout bearing, no flywheel cover, cant find one.????should I try adjusting the clutch pedal adjustment?
My noise went away after I had ran it a few times...If it sets for a couple weeks, then it'll squal on startup, but it goes away within seconds...Does your sound fluctuate when you push the pedal in and out?? Mine did...how is it driving?
