I'm new to this site. I am so glad I found it!! I have an 89 B2, 2.9, 2wheel drive, 180,000 miles. I have just sank $400 into tires, $400 into brake job, now the A/C went out. $1000 to fix and it looks like I'll need a new master brake cylinder. Need the a/c especially when it hits 105. Till now, it's been costing me about $300 a year to keep her running. Runs good. Glad to see ABS light is problem for lots of people, now I really can ignore it. Being like most people, there is no way I can afford a new vehicle. My choices are fix her up or buy someone elses problems. She's never left me anywhere. How much is reasonable to drop into her? Is the A/c and MBC too much? I've started buffing her out and she's looking better. Being in the desert, the is little to no rust, but oxidization.
THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR THE GREAT INFO CHEERS
Unless the frame is broken or it is a Fiat or MG, the cheapest vehicle is the one you already own. $1000 seems on the high side unless it is a new compressor. I love the vehicles, I would keep it -OR- buy a 1984.85 (I like those best of all) and swap over the tires and brakes.
Thank you so much for your reply. Yep, it is a new compressor. Mechanics haven't had much luck with remanuf. ones. I was okay until mechanic said his 'new' compressor lasted 3 years. I thought, darn, mine has lasted 21 and I'm spending 1000 for one that might last 3. Ok, they just don't make things like they used to. I love my bronco! I've decided to fix her up. I can do a few things myself, but most work will be done by mechanics. Thanks again for replying!!
$1000 For a AC work! Sounds like they are replacing everything in there for AC. On my 89 B2, it was R12 and I converted it over to R134 with no problems till the AC clutch blew apart taking out the compresser. I'd look around for a better shop or wait till cooler season when AC is not needed as much.
