Sold the Cummin's and bought an 06 F350 Lariat....I really liked the idea of owning a truck from a non bailed out company. It's got 170k on the ticker and I've been doing some reading and I already know an EGR delete kit is a good idea. I was looking at the Sinister but was looking for feedback on those that have a kit from them as well as any other kit that you may have tried.
The last couple of mornings I have had some white smoke out of the exhaust for maybe 3-5 seconds when first taking off and then it doesn't do it anymore. Doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold. Only does it in the mornings, still 80 degrees in the morning here. Am I correct in assuming this is probably an EGR cooler issue or would it be something else?
Lastly, I drove a brand new 06 before I bought my Cummin's (06 also) and I remember that you could hear a nice whirl in the cab coming from the turbo. In my truck I can't hear the turbo at all and it definitely doesn't get out of the hole like the new one I test drove in 06. Possibly a turbo clean and rebuild needed? Where can I get a rebuild kit for it? I read that they had a part number change on the VGT valve, anyone know what the newest part number is?
white smoke in the morning can be a few things.
egr cooler once its smoking will only smoke more.
IMO ficm voltage, battery voltage, low fuel pressure, lightly dusted engine to name a few thngs to look for.

Where and how do I check the FCIM voltage? What voltage should I see? What fuel pressure and where do I check it? Not sure what you meant by "dusted engine".

I actually don't subscribe to that line of thinking. You can have a reliable engine and still have a working EGR system.
The biggest reason(that I think of anyway) that people are right off the bat saying that the EGR system needs to be deleted is that Ford had to replace multiple EGR systems and they didn't fix the Oil Cooler was probably the root cause of the EGR cooler to fail. If the Oil cooler was bad and they left it, your new EGR cooler would eventually fail. That happened(and in some instances still happens depending on the skill and quality of the dealership or service shop that the owner went to) quite a bit and it left a nasty taste in people's mouth.
I can think of another reason why it wouldn't be a good idea, but not many people care about that one, so I'll leave that one be.
Bottomline is that you can still have a reliable truck and have an operating EGR system. Yes your EGR system could fail, but that would be likely caused by the Oil cooler then it was the EGR system in of itself. That Oil cooler could also still fail rather or not you do the delete/bypass for the EGR system.
Also, being that yours is an 06 that you are looking at(or have already gotten), you'll need to get a custom tuner in order to tell the truck's computer not to look for the EGR sensor(s) or else you will enter into what is affectionately known as "EPA Limp Mode".
finally i think I'm getting somewhere. I have an 07 6.0 that i first removed the scoop in the up tube and welded a fender washer in the egr cooler. then i read all i had to do was unplug the egr. with that done. when i first run the truck it runs ggggreat. then after about a half hour it seems to be running on 7 cylinders. could this be (epa limp mode) cel is on and code reads insufficient egr gasses. I have no tuner. all stock except for straight exhaust. thanks tex25025

Yep. Or something like EGR Range/Performance will also trigger it.
if I remove the fender washer will that help or should i get a tuner. I'm not looking for more power ( i have enough) just maybe better economy. can you suggest a tuner.

Well, since you are wanting to disable the EGR sensor, you'll need to get a custom tuner. No ifs ands or buts about it. SCT will do fine by you if you are on a budget. Get the X3 though. You can have them just do 1 tune for you and that would be to disable the EGR sensor. They don't have to do anything else. The joys of custom tuning.
I wouldn't do a tuner for fuel economy. You might see gains, you might not, you might even see losses. It'll take a lot of miles(and I do mean a lot) to break even on doing a tuner for fuel economy reasons.
I plan on putting in a new oil cooler when I install the EGR delete. I do realize that the oil cooler could cause some of this but I don't want to be pulling this thing apart every weekend replacing parts. It seems from what I have read the "safest" thing to do is an EGR delete, oil cooler replace, coolant filter and clean the turbo.......all at the same time. Then order an SCT with a custom tune to delete the EGR. From some of the recent findings that Mark had it seems its better to leave the EGR valve in place with it hooked up as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.....still new to this Powerstroke thing.
it was me and not mark but that man deserves all the credit he can get.
you are correct on the leave the egr valve pluged in. That is what my findings on my 06 was.

That's exactly what I did. I also got the new flash, 4" exhaust, upgraded fuel pressure reg kit, and turbo oil drain tube.

Sorry Cheezit, my mistake on the name. So the SCT will keep the EGR from opening then?

By latest flash I assume your mean from the dealership? What is the part number for the upgraded fuel pressure reg kit? Is it needed for the 06 models?

I measured the voltage at the ficm, went to about 45.8 right off the bat and climbed to 48 within a second or so. Battery voltage was right at 12.5 volts. It seems like my batteries are a little weak when starting. Maybe my imagination but it seems to crank over slow and my radar detector beeps on and off while cranking. They are 2 years old so I might go ahead and replace them. Voltage jumps to 13.5 when running so the alternator seems okay. Going to check the fuel pressure next, what should it be? Do I need to pick up a gauge for this or will a program like Auto Enginuity or a programmer show the pressure?
thanks tex i'm new to all of this. my truck was doing that puking thing in the degas. which led me to removing the scoop and inserting the fender washer. now it seems i'm chasing one change after another.
