So I found a 72 highboy on craigslist and after having a hard time communicating and getting any info out of the person I had given up on it. Then two months later it shows up on CL again, so again I reply and was a bit miffed at the posting but not responding deal. I guess that worked as I get a response, truck is in good shape but wont start due to battery or something but nothing major but it is involved in some sort of legal dispute and keys and title are pending. Ok no biggie if its clean I can wait, I am assured that it is in good shape just been sitting and wont turn over, and the picture looked good so off we go (my son and I) 98 miles one way in my beater 83 Toyota 4x, five different freeways 1.5 hours later we get there.
Here is the fun part, we find the address but it is on one of those group mailboxes at the end of a dirt road. I cruise slowly keeping my eyes peeled for what in my mind now is the "greatest Highboy in the world" at the end of the road we find it, at a rattlesnake farm, that's right you heard me a rattlesnake farm! Big signs warning of rattlesnakes everywhere but no people, cars there with doors open lights on in the barn but no people, weird. I stroll up the the truck, which is getting rougher and rougher as I approach and behold, the biggest POS I have ever seen. No radiator a header on one side and stock manifold on the other, missing brackets, carb, valve covers, tons of crap packed in the cab, the list goes on. The body was descent and it is a sport custom with all the trim and no visible rust that I could see through the blanket of cobwebs, and all four Armstrong tires held air but how I don't know as the cracks were deep and plentiful. So we split and on the way home my son, he's 10, was really bummed so we decided to keep looking or get a kayak, but yeah I am bummed I miss my highboy and want another.
