1965 Econoline Pickup Transmission Fitment

I have a 1965 Econoline Pickup with no motor or trans and found/bought a rebuilt 170 which is what came in mine originally according to the codes.

As for the listed transmission, it has this: Ford 3-speed manual, model 3.03 HEF Gears: 1st=3.41, 2nd=1.86, 3rd=1.00, R=3.51

Anyone know where I can find one (matching) to fit my pickup or what vehicles may have the same trans in them? I know a lot of vehicles have this trans but since there is a ton of information online it just begins to make no sense after a while. I'm on day five and have been told at least 9 different conflicting stories on where I can find one or what I can get one out of.

I realize at this point that there is an issue with the original one being shorter than the ones that one might find in say a mustang, and even that may be only the Econo vans/pickups had an upper mount. That said, does anyone know where an original one that needs to be rebuilt or is already good can be found or like I said above a compatible one out of another ford? I don't want to get into modifying it but if that is what is going to have to take place then offer a suggestion towards that line of action.

Appreciate anyone's help out there!

For an easy bolt in, you need a transmission from a 1965 to 1967 Econoline that came with a 170 or rare 200 engine.

the 240 engine had a different bell housing, but that can be swapped with one from any 170 engine. The output of the 240 transmission had the larger u joints, but you can swap out the driveshaft.

the Econolines had a very short output shaft with a short rear cover in order to keep the short driveshaft as long as posible.

you could use a transmission from a Falcon, Mustang, or other Ford of the same era (170 or 200 engine) that has the long output shaft and have a custom driveshaft made. This might cause premature wear on your u joints, or it might work just fine.

have you seen this page on transmissions?

and driveshafts

if you did not already have a 170 engine, I'd say now is the time to upgrade to a 200, which will bolt right in, and is a more powerful engine.

I just kind of ended up with the 170 and its a fresh rebuild so Im sticking with it. Its just a truck to kick around in right now. Im looking everywhere for the output shaft to stay pretty much original as I can get the toploader out of various years from what I have been told. I can't find that output shaft anywhere though! Probably end up modifying as usual Damnit I just wanted a bolt together truck right now as I have to many projects to get in to custom builds at this time

Appreciate you, Vic
