Anyway, it turns out that my slave cyl is leaking fluid, and I will need to replace it soon. My truck is 2WD and I have access to a lift and tranny jack, so I am going to do it myself. I was told to go with the LUk or Borg Warner clutch. As to the slave cyl, have most aftermarket parts been ok? Or should I get motorcraft?
I do want quality pieces which will last.
I don't know if a Motorcraft will necessarily be better, as the factory slave cylinder went out at 50K miles, although the Ford dealer replaced it and it lasted 70K miles until my clutch replacement, when I replaced it even though nothing was wrong with it. I didn't give it much thought at the time, but I've got Wagner slave cylinder in now.
If you're that concerned, just get a Motorcraft. Probably the safest bet.
A couple friends and I did my '91 F-250 4.9 4x4 5 speeds clutch a month ago. I got Ford everything... Clutch, pressure plate, slave cylinder (included the throw out bearing),pilot bearing, and I decided to get a new flywheel. It really wasn't too horrible to do. I had less than $500 in parts. A local transmission shop wanted between $700 and $800 to do it and I wouldn't have gotten a new flywheel.
After putting it off, I replaced the clutch and slave cyl today. It only took 2 hrs. went very smoothly. My flywheel was in good shape with no grooves or burn marks. I ended up using a Borgwarner clutch and raybestos slave. Here is hoping for long life. thanks for all the help.
