Seems to be a large range in prices for trucks used. Just the differences in a XL to a King Ranch with a diesel can drive you crazy. Not that KBB isn't close but it seems to be too average. Seems trade ins are lower and used retail always higher.
Pittsburgh Area
Friend just bought a clean 06 CC F350 Lariat 4x4 diesel at 30k miles and a cap= $30,000. Figure if he bought the same truck new, close to $60k, so half price doesn't sound so bad.
But when I compare it to mine; 3 years newer, 1/2 miles and diesel for $20k or more?
Looked to trade in my 03 CC F350 Lariat 4x4 V-10 at 74k miles and was offered $8500. Some rust on wheel well hurt it but otherwise top shape. Never a work truck, use it to go to work 1 mile away and a few miles around town to the stores, tows twice a year, spray in bedliner is like new. Fixed the rust for under $1k. Now dealer admitted it would go for $10k at auction. And the sleazy used lot down the road has one for $16.5k. KBB put it at a trade for $12.5k poor condition and $16k excellent. I would have taken the poor price at the time due to rust but not $4k under.
Just wanted to see if others are seeing for used trucks, or offered in trades in other areas. Please include location, model and options and how long ago.
I am a dodge guy, don't worry I am strongly considering a new ford, after have a piece of junk '06. my '06 has sucked so bad I have been looking at getting another truck and what my options are.
the thing that sticks out to me is WOW these trucks have really really went up in price for a new one. I bought my truck brand new 4 years ago for 32 grand. its an SLT 4x4 quad cab diesel auto. its not fully loaded but it does have power seats and all the important options. for me to get the same truck now would cost me at least 45k.
with that said the expensive prices of new trucks has reflected in the price of used ones. its not uncommon to see a truck like my '06 with 90k miles with an asking price of 25k, that just seems insane to me, however it will help me toward getting a new truck.
I am looking at getting a ford XL diesel 4 door, I wanna get power windows and locks but really how many options does a guy really need. the new XL's come with a message center still and also have an outside temp guage in the dash, thats really all I care about. this will save 4 grand off getting the XLT and at the end of the day from what I can tell, I will not have aluminum wheels, carpet on the floor, and a chrome grill. I think I will take the 4k in savings.

.
Depending on the F-350 it could have been bought for $35k to $36k new.$30k for a 5 year old truck is a bit strong for me.A couple years ago it could have sold for under $20k
I quickly looked at an '06 350 Lariet at a local Ford dealer last week first asking was $35.9k quickly comming to$29.9k
I just bought a '99 F-250 Diesel with 150k on it for $8700. Granted, I now have a considerable amount more into it, having done a bunch of maintenance and put a lift on and a few other goodies.

I thought the same thing. $30k for five years old but compared to the new price it's a good buy. That's my point. One way its good, the other crazy.
In April, I bought a 2001 F250 XL Super Cab, Long Bed 5.4L 4X4 with a Service Body and 37,800 miles. Paid $7500 at a Government Auction. Granted it was used as a work truck, but because it was owned by the Feds, it was maintained by the book. And beacuse of the low miles, it still essentially rides like a new truck.
I guess no real book value can be determined with a service body. Miles look good but was it used to 4x4 or just "in case". I would not want a 37,000 gov truck which was used for a bunch of offroad. But if for snow, no problem.
I can tell you what my 04 truck was worth 2 weeks ago on a trade. I have Z plan privileges and therefore a fixed price. The 04 truck in my signature with 128000 miles brought $14000 in trade.

Well, its hard to say what qualifies as "off road" up here. During winter, even my daily commuter is locked in full time 4X4 for 8 months out of the year. It's impossible to find out what the Feds were actually using it for, but I don't see anything that makes me think it was too severe. I bought it to use as a snow plow and general beater anyway, so its actually in way too nice a shape for what I'm intending!
As a comparison, the company I work for routinely surplusses out our fleet 2500's and 3500's at roughly the same age for comparable prices. The only difference is that many of these trucks have racked up one or two hundred thousand miles of continuous driving up and down the Dalton Hwy. Talk about taking a beating! Yet these still fetch premium prices at auction. Go figure...!
I live in a town called Confluence we have a ford dealership wright in town it is one and half hours south of pittsburgh,pa.In of this year I bought a 2007 superduty 250 XLT 4X4 5.4 25,000 miles for $21,000.00.
I wasnt sure If it was a good deal or not?I price checked on the internet and seen some with really close miles as what I got with in $1000.00 abouve or below what I paid for the same year and truck that I got.So I went for it.

If the hold the new truck at full retail they can make the trade seem high
The dealer I work with is an invoice or better on new. The only dickering is trade which I usually dont have with him (three buys now all at invoice or "Ford Pricing" which was even better.) In fact I can say I have paid invoice on all my new Ford purchases due to the Ranger being a Couger Lemon law buy back.
