I have a 2000 f250 7.3 with 137,000 miles on it. Bully dog shift kit in a rebuilt tranny, AFE cold air, and 4" muffler back exhaust. I originaly had a Bully Dog 6 pos switch (avg 13 mpg). About two years ago changed to DP F5 (40 tow,60tow,80e,120race). I drove in town and on highway on 80e and towed boat with 60tow. I liked the power and options for towing and got 15 mpg, but the injectors were kind of noisy. A few months ago sent tuner back to get updated and two more settings added, the power was still good and mileage did not change, but the injectors were VERY loud. The down shifting was nice while towing, but annoying while driving in town on 80e. Every time it slowed to 40mph it would drop a gear and would almost stall when coming to a stop on every setting except stock. About a week ago I got a 6 pos flip switch from local diesel shop (a reburnt Bully Dog) the power is also good on it, but the injectors are quiet like stock again and the mileage went up to 19mpg!
Am I the only one not satisfied with the DP tuner or have other people experienced these problems? I still like the customer service, all calls are returned quickly and polite personel, but I could never like the loud injectors.
I have Jody's new/live tunes and there is no noticeable noise change from stock to 80e. Have shift points and certain characteristics adjusted to my preference. I have heard others share the same concerns. I had an edge evo and for me it was much noisier than with the DP. I can scroll thru my tunes and except for "drive thru" and decel can not hear a difference in injector noise.
I only have 2 tunes but 40T and 80E only add a little extra clatter and I think my empty milage is good 17.5 interstate and up to 18.5 back roads in the mountains.Shifting is another story.
In stock it shifts good,40T if I'm towing or give it a little throttle (similar to normal take off) is unusable,it has some goofy slam shift at about 18mph that feels like it will jerk the trans out.Other than that if I drive with an egg under my right foot it works good.
In 80E it has a somewhat goofy shift taking off and an early third gear shift
If I can ever get a Valve body or shift kit I will send it in for upgrade and see if it gets better
That's a pretty large jump in MPG's. Are you saying it has the same power as the DP? What tune are you running in to see that kind of jump? Are you driving the same, or has the driving style changed some? What is the name of your local diesel shop?
No offense meant, but a claim of a 26% increase in fuel economy sounds more like an advertisement you'd read in some magazine that wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.
Is everyone here in love with DP. No. Some here are not very fond of them at all, several others like them but now use different tunes. I know several people running several different tunes, but I don't know of any that make that kind of increase in MPG's without some other contributing factor(s).
The local shop is Shiver's Diesel. The chip settings are close to the same (+50,75,100,140, & high idle) The drive was from Tallahasse FL to Valdosta GA on +75hp. Once in a great while with the DP I would see 16mpg driving from Tallahasse to Gainsville on the interstate, but not more of a chage than that from in town to interstate driving. I have in the past trying to slow down on the highway to 65mph but could not make a noticeable increase in mpgs.

The Bully Dog shift kit seemed to work well with my DP (as far as firm, well timed upshifts). If it had to drop a gear going up a hill however, it would SLAM back into final gear.
No website, they are really just a repair shop. The chip was burnt for them by TS Performance (atleast thats the name on the instructions) and they do have a website tsperformance.com.
I don't notice much difference between the power of the DP and this chip.
The EGTs are bout the same as DP, but I have not towed with it yet to make that comparison.
Shift strategies are stock, unlocks converter when brake is hit
Thanks for the reply. I know several folks who have upgraded from a TS chip to either DP or TDP. All of them have commented about those chips having more power than the TS chip. I don't recall any of them talking about a drastic drop in MPG's after the switch (assuming you don't count the first couple of tanks while they were playing with the increased HP).
If you're happy with it, that's really all that matters. If you tow with it and decide it's not all you hoped it would be, come back and others can offer suggestions as to what works for them, or you could call Jody and talk to him about your injector noise concerns. Are you checking MPG's by hand or trusting the overhead display?
Be sure to keep us updated on how the chip handles as you get more miles on it.

How old are your tunes Ray? You could either get updated ones for what you have or wait for the VB mods. Either way the slamming days are over unless you want them.
I have had TS tunes and they were much better than stock but just OK compared to other tunes I have run. I am considering loading some other tunes on my old TS style chip just to see what else is out there nowadays. After all it is sitting in a box right now doing nothing.
I have had the chip about 2 1/2 years
I really wanted to do the trans mods before upgrading tunes and see how the trans acted without the chip
Those are not too terribly old. Should have had that shift slamming fixed back when you got them. The VB mods really firm things up without a chip so tuning will need adjusting or go (yawn) with stock tuning.

Well I will say that I'm satisfied with my DP, but those 2 things you mentioned I also experience so you're not alone. They are the only two things that have left me somewhat unsatisfied, but overall I still like it and have no plans to change; I really like the way the truck shifts especially when towing.
At idle I can't tell a difference between stock and any performance tune, but under load and cruising my injectors are much, much noisier compared to the stock tune. I don't exactly like the noise but I can handle it; it just makes me second guess things once in a while. As for the downshifting and bogging when coming to a stop, I contacted Jody and I'm very hopefull he can find a little time this month in TN and tweak all that for me.
One day I really would like to try out something new from a different tuner to compare and see if I'd ever want to make the switch, but can't justify the coin just to test it.
