This weekend our 2001 Supercrew(79,000 miles) was shaking on startup, with some bluish smoke coming out of the tailpipe. After finding this forum we read about the ERG valve, and coolant spillage problems, etc. Well we dropped off the truck this morning and Ford has called back.
The dealer says that the on-board computer is bad, somehow it's corrupted. It has been telling the #1 fuel injector to dump fuel non-stop. This caused the shaking and smoke. And it has also caused the #1 fuel injector to fail. End of story, the computer and the fuel injector must be replaced. $1500.
Just thought I would post and make sure that everything sounds right. I doubt that we are being "taken," but it seems like asking you guys would be a good idea before I have to o.k. the work, and sign a check.
The explanation sounds good but I would want to know if just the injector has stuck open, first.
In a nut shell, the PCM has a solid state switch that when triggered by the PCM logic, supplies a ground to the injector that has 14 volts permanent on one side of it's winding and causes it to open.
If indeed the PCM switch for that injector is causing a permant ground the injector will dump a lot of fuel and cause this issue as you have discribed.
Only fix is to replace the PCM, if so.
It's easy to see this with some testing.
Good luck.
Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't make sense to my dad that the computer was causing the problem AND the fuel injector had to be replaced. We are going to the dealer in the morning. Thanks for the info.
