when i turn the key the cranking starts out real slow then gradually gets faster.. after a few times of cranking and letting the starter cool, and cranking again it gets enuff speed to fire..
any ideas?
i was thinkinng it might be the starter? but im not sure..
Check the cables as well. they could be corroded under the insulation. Also check and clean all your cable grounds. Could be they are making better contact as they heat up.
Ensure it's in Park or Neutral
Set Parking brake
Chock wheels
Have some one turn the key to start while you feel cables and connections, bad connections get hot.
If you want to prevent it from starting for testing, disconnect the FSS on the Injection pump, Disconnect the forward most (to front of truck) wire on the Injection pump.
The most common connection failure point is the positive battery terminal on the right (US passenger) side.
If the cable insulation is bulging at the connections it is corroded.
x2 on battery cable being corroded. these things can get eaten from the inside out. quick way to find out is to run a jumper cable from the battery on the passenger side down to the starter stud. then try cranking again. if it spins faster the first time then you know its a cable issue. you might wanna hook the negitive clamp to the battery and then to the block. could also be bad ground cables causing weak connection.
bypass it. jump a cable from the post closest to the battery to the first skinny post closest to the battery. if it spins then its ok. if it doesnt, then its bad.
The next time you try to start it, feel all of the connections while you're waiting for cool down. You'll definitely find the problem. Any resistance will build heat!
so i tried ur check for the solenoid, it doesnt spin, but it clicks, as if its turning on and off...
i also took a jumper cable from the positive battery terminal, to the positive terminal on the starter solenoid, and nothing happened, it sparked a lil bit but no crank..
does this mean that the starter is bad? or something else?
i just went through this same scenario last week and i didnt think the cables were corroded so i didnt check.well i ended up cutting open the cables 3" and guess what i had corrosion.lol
if its clicking that means its trying to send power though it. now try jumping from the big post to the big post. if it doesnt spin then, then its the solenoid thats bolted to the starter itself.
